2015 angel's anvil by crowned heads

2015 Angel’s Anvil from Crowned Heads

Tonight we’re smoking the 2015 Angel’s Anvil from Crowned Heads – the second in this series of TAA-limited releases.  The 2015 edition came in the form of a 6” x 52 toro (as opposed to the 2014 edition, which was 7.125” x 49, featured on Episode 152).  It features an Ecuadoran Habano wrapper over Nicaraguan binder and fillers, and retailed for just over $10US at release.  Total production was 20,000 cigars.

      • Camaleon Huevo de Oro – The Golden Egg.  This is another of the newer companies putting out a cigar here in the DR.  I don’t know if/when they will be available stateside.  I enjoyed this one, but found it slightly out of balance with more potency than flavor….what this means is, it whipped me.  Nice, slightly sweet profile overall – and while the strength wasn’t brash, it snuck up on me.

2014 Angel's Anvil by Crowned Heads

2014 Angel’s Anvil by Crowned Heads

One of the limited TAA releases for 2014, the Angel’s Anvil from Crowned Heads is a 7-⅛” x 49 churchill that features an Ecuadoran Havana wrapper over Nicaraguan binder and fillers.  It was made at EP Carrillo’s La Alianza factory in the Dominican Republic.  They were originally sold for about $10.50, in boxes of 20 with a total production around 20,000.  Let’s see how it is smoking these days….

Cigar News

    • With all the covert cigar releases showing up around the US due to the FDA legislative deadlines, there were bound to be a few that drew my attention.  For no other reason than it’s so out of character with the history, I’m intrigued by one that showed up in social media feeds from Drew Estate – the DE Dominicana.  Atlantic Cigar had some show up, but not a whole lot is yet known about the blend – other than that there are 3 wrapper variations (shade (which I’ll presume to be CT, but we’ll see), rosado, and maduro).  These were apparently manufactured in the Dominican Republic, rather than DE’s factory in Nicaragua.  I know Swisher has some operations here in Santiago, but the DE Dominicana is reported to be a longfiller, non-flavored cigar.  It comes in a variety of vitolas amongst the three blends, and ranges in price from $7.25 to about $9.
    • Cigar Aficionado is reporting that General Cigar and Michael Giannini have parted ways.  According to the article, the parting was amicable, with both parties praising each other for their time together.  At least in part, the separation was attributed to FDA legislation…I will go out on a limb to speculate that this is largely because Giannini’s role in the company relied significantly on new, limited, non-traditional products that may not be feasible in the era of FDA regulation.
    • I saw two articles come across my feed recently from halfwheel that I thought were worthy of some discussion:
      1. First, a small town in Utah has prohibited both use *and possession* of tobacco in its parks.  And. Possession.  Whisky Tango Foxtrot.
      2. There’s an interesting editorial from Charlie Minato covering some of his collected thoughts about pricing changes that may be/should be coming down the pike stemming from regulation.  He has some good insights into a few things manufacturers may be overlooking, and some potential pitfalls that could evolve from knee-jerk reactions or poorly thought-out responses.  It’s definitely worth a read.

What Else We’ve Been Smoking

      • EP Carrillo Cardinal maduro from zedman.  I didn’t recall liking these much in the past, but this one (I believe he said from 2014) was quite tasty – loads of toasty flavors and perfect construction.
      • 2016 Oktoberfest from Quesada.  I keep hoping for a repeat of the 2011 blend I loved so dearly at the time…but still no dice.  This was one of their better offerings, though, with more “oomph” than recent offerings and a solid dose of pert spice.  It was good on its own merits, but I still miss that 2011….

Punch Rare Corojo Returns for 2016

February 17, 2016 By Kip Fisher

2016 Punch Rare Corojo with New Frontmark

Punch Rare Corojo SINGLE STICKGeneral Cigar has announced that the annual return of the Punch Rare Corojo has begun. A new limited frontmark will be added to the lineup, while one of the former sizes is being retired.

This year, an addition comes to the line in the form of the Regalias Perfecto, a 7.25” x 54 perfecto, exclusively available as part of a trade offer. The Regalias Perfecto will come in 10-count wooden boxes and carries a suggested retail price of $7.99 per cigar.

The existing 6.75″ x 48 Double Corona will be retired after this year’s production allotment has been exhausted.

The Rare Corojo line is rolled in Honduras and features an Ecuadoran Sumatra wrapper. This wrapper leaf is grown in limited quantity, and are attributed with giving the Punch Rare Corojo its uniquely smooth taste. The binder is Connecticut Broadleaf, and the filler blend features Nicaraguan, Honduran and Dominican tobacco.

Ed McKenna, senior brand manager for General Cigar’s Punch brand said, “The trend of seasonal cigars started with Punch Rare Corojo, and each year, cigar lovers eagerly anticipate the return of this exceptional blend. Given the range of frontmarks and the addition of Regalias Perfecto to this year’s lineup, we are confident that the limited supply of Punch Rare Corojo will be depleted quickly.”

From General Cigar:

Reintroduced in 2001 after a shortage of wrapper leaves caused the product to disappear at retail for several years, Punch Rare Corojo sold out as quickly as it returned that year.  Since then, General Cigar has been able to secure a sufficient amount of the rare Ecuadoran Sumatra wrapper for a limited annual release of Punch Rare Corojo. This year’s allotment is available in nine sizes, ranging in SRP from $4.19 to $8.29 per cigar.

Half Ashed Episode 127: L’Atelier Cote d’Or

L'Atelier Cote d'Or

L’Atelier Cote d’Or

The L’Atelier Cote d’Or debuted in April ‘15, as a special limited release.  It was produced by My Father for the company, and features a small amount of Pelo de Oro, an Ecuadoran Sancti Spiritus wrapper, and an all-Nicaraguan binder/filler combination.  Total production for the cigar was limited to about 21,000 cigars, packaged in boxes of ten and retailed for about $16 per stick.  It measures 7”x47.

Cigar News

In celebration of Carlos Fuente Sr.’s 80th birthday, Fuente is releasing the famed “Senior Blend” Don Carlos to the public.  Previously, it was hard to come by outside of a few events or from a family members’ hand.  It is a tweaked version of the regular production Don Carlos blend, and will be available in two vitolas – a 5×50 robusto ($14) and the “Eye of the Shark,” a box pressed belicoso measuring 5.75” x 52 ($11.95).  The robusto is all Dominican internally, with a Cameroon wrapper – while the blend details for the Eye of the Shark have not been revealed.  Cigar Aficionado has mistakenly reported that this is the 30th anniversary of the Don Carlos line….however, the series came out in 1976 and celebrated with the 30th Anniversary blend in 2006….

Hammer & Sickle, a cigar line with which I’m only vaguely familiar, is releasing a special “Peat-fired” cigar called the Caleanoch 25.  I understand some of the leaf is fire cured like others we’ve seen in the past – with one change.  Rather than various hardwoods being used, peat will be burned during the curing process.  It will feature an Ecuadoran CT wrapper over Dominican corojo binder and Dominican fillers.  Initially, the 25 will have about 25% peat-fired leaf in the filler blend – but, subsequent releases will have 50 and 75%, and be renamed respectively.  It will be available in a single 6”x50 vitola and retailer for $12.50.

Cubanacan Eastern Sales Manager and friend of Half Ashed Nate McIntyre is launching his own line of cigars, called Percy Ray Cigars.  It will be a limited annual release, produced by Cubanacan in their Nicaraguan factory, with the first release coming in a batch of about 800 boxes.  The name of the line is a tribute to McIntyre’s grandfather, to whom Nate attributes his work ethic and values.

Chogui, a line currently only available in the DR, is coming to the US.  I had the chance to sit down at a Santiago cigar shop with Victor Nicolas last week, and he tells me he’ll soon be shipping several thousand cigars to the states.  They will be from his second offering, Dos77 (which has an interesting backstory for that name), and were rolled in August 2014.  I am trying to catch up with him at the factory this upcoming week when he returns to Santiago and check out his next project….I have to tell you, though, the Dos77 is probably the most refreshing new cigar I’ve had since moving to the DR.

Reynaldo Corona Gorda 11/14 – Gift from Zedman – An alluring mild/medium cigar. Slightly tannic & tart but with a terrific pseudo-cocoa undertone. It was sweet and difficult to describe. The burn was perfect, even while driving, and smoking time was nearly 90 minutes

Southern Draw Kudzu – AJ Fernandez through and through. Nicaragua sweet spice. Dusty & full bodied. Strength was there but not overpowering. The palate pollution was a bit high but trading swigs of water and puffs kept it at bay. Very very enjoyable if you like the style.

Arturo Fuente Destino al Siglo – Lots here. Not all of it is good.

las cumbres senorial

Las Cumbres Señorial

Manufactured for José Blanco at Tabacalera La Palma by Jochi Blanco, the Señorial is the first line of cigars to be released by Blanco under his company, Las Cumbres Tabaco. Tonight’s vitola is the Paco Robusto, measuring 5-¼” X 52.  It has an Ecuadoran Habano wrapper over an Estelian Binder and Dominican Piloto Cubano & Corojo filler leaves. The cigar comes across with mostly “hard” flavors of wood, slight earth, a spicy sweetness (more akin to hot cinnamon spice than baking) and a minimally salty flavor at the finish.  Other available vitolas include:

Corona Gorda No.5 (5-1/2″ X 46)
Toro Bravo (6″ X 54)
Le Grand (6″ X 60)
Belicoso No.2 (6-1/4″ X 52)

Cigar News

Chogui, a brand mentioned by Skip Martin as a favored new cigar when he visited the Dominican Republic, has released a new line – the Dos77.  There’s a story behind that name of the 277th (of 300) box of the company’s original line being lost in transit to Santo Domingo.  The company is not distributed outside the Dominican Republic, but I’m working on tracking down a few to possibly get into the rotation.  They’re produced in Tamboril, which is only a few miles from my house…. the Dos77 is produced in a single 5×52 vitola called a rogusto (robusto / gusto), and features a Dominican wrapper over a criollo 98 binder and corojo fillers (DR puro).  $7 apiece in boxes of 16; initial run of 300 boxes, with upwards of 25k more on the way

General announced during IPCPR that there will be a forthcoming Margaritaville brand from CAO.  They will produce a piña colada flavored offering called Margaritaville (cameroon over DR/DR) and a non-flavored, traditional cigar called Havana Daydreamin’ (Ecuadoran Connecticut over Nicaraguan fillers).  Pricing across the lines will run from $5-7.

Glory be!  illusione will be releasing a 7×40 lancero in the Fume D’Amour line.  This line is still probably my very favorite cigar from the past 12 months.  I’m fresh out, but still deeply in love with ‘em.  It, like its other Fd’A brethren, will be a Nicaraguan puro produced via Casa Fernandez.  No MSRP as of yet…

In an interesting move, Eddie Ortega will be taking over the sales department for Quality Importers per a story by Cigar Coop.  Quality Importers is primarily a distribution company in S. FL, and will also take over distribution for Ortega Cigars.  I’m anxious to see how this shakes out.  Things have been fairly quiet in the Ortega camp for quite some time…although Eddie has revamped his website to reflect the integration with QI, stating that “Ortega Is Now Part Of Quality Importers Family Of Brands.”  Not sure what this means in terms of ownership, etc.  Time will tell…

In local news, InTabaco (the Dominican tobacco authorities) burned up 2221 boxes of fake cigars collected from tourist areas throughout the country.  This was apparently a “crackdown,” but less than a week later I witnessed fakes being sold up and down the beaches on the northern coast….

What Else We’ve Been Smoking

Craig

Kelner – Yum
PSD4 – Amazing
Casa Magna – Domus Magnus – Holy sh*t

Kip

In recent days, I have slipped into a routine of smoking those cigars with which I moved to the DR in large supply.  There are a handful of brands in that number, but the two I have been reaching for of late are Sam Leccia’s Luchador and My Father’s Flor de las Antillas.  I love these two blends, but have to admit it’s time to acclimate a bit more and re-widen my horizons.  In fact, as much as I love Nicaraguan tobacco, I suddenly have a much higher interest in Dominican offerings.  I think it’s time to dabble a bit more in my local produce….

Half Ashed Episode 115: Ashton Symmetry with Bob

Subscribe: Apple Podcasts | Google Podcasts | Spotify | Stitcher | RSS | Upcoming Schedule

ashton symmetry cg

Ashton Symmetry

When the Ashton Symmetry was released in Fall 2014, it was the first new Ashton line in almost 10 years.  It, like most other cigars to carry the Ashton marque, is a Fuente produced product, and features a “cloud-grown” Ecuadoran habano wrapper.  Internally, it has some Dominican leaf from Villa Gonzalez and the Fuentes’ Un Buen Vecino farm in Estelí, Nicaragua.  It comes in 5 vitolas, including this corona gorda called the Prism, and retails for $11-12.50 depending on size.

Tune in with Kip and special guest Bob McDuffee to chat up what he’s been up to lately and a few rabbit trails just begging to be followed….

Cigar News

I’m a big fan of Fratello – one of the newer lines out there, owned by Omar de Frias.  The corona in his first lineup is a phenomenal cigar…and now he is coming out with a maduro.  It will have a soft launch with a handful of retailers in the next few weeks, and full availability at IPCPR.  The Bianco will come with a Mexican San Andres wrapper, Dominican binder and a filler blend containing Peruvian, Nicaraguan, and Pennsylvania broadleaf.  It’s coming out of Esteli, but there’s no mention of the factory.  It will be available in 20-ct boxes, in 3 vitolas – 6.25×44, 6×50, and 5×56.  A fourth, event exclusive 5×44 will also be produced.  The line isn’t a spinoff from their first line, which launched in 2013.  It’s an entirely new blend according to Omar. Subsequent picture

After going thus far with a single vitola (although two were planned since IPCPR 2014), Drew Estate is releasing an extension to the Nica Rustica line.  It’s a 7.5”x54 belicoso called the “Belly.”  It will have a Connecticut broadleaf wrapper over Mexican San Andres binder and Nicaraguan filler tobaccos.  It’s scheduled to begin shipping nationally in September, but will have a soft launch at an event July 30th in Louisville, KY.  Pricing is expected to be around $8/stick.

Fresh off our recent discussions about cigar companies making cigars specifically to be paired with or flavored by beverages (Drew Estate’s PVW, C&C’s Dram, Asylum’s Dragon’s Milk, etc.), Perdomo is throwing their hat in the ring.  They will be releasing the Craft Series, intended to be cigars for beer enthusiasts.  This line is very much akin to C&C’s Dram series – with the Dram intended to be paired with whiskey, and the Craft Series with beer.  It will include a CT-wrapped (Pilsner), Sungrown (Amber) and Maduro (Stout).  While I understand the idea behind these pairing series, I guess I’m a bit of a skeptic.  Most of my experience has shown good pairings to be more experimentation and happy accident than hard science…and it seems most folks’ ideas about what goes well together are different enough to make it inconsistent at best.  In any event, the line will come in 3 vitolas (5.5”x54 robusto, 6.5”x54 epicure, and 6”x60 gordo), and retail for $7-8.50 depending on vitola.

Pinar del Rio is releasing a whole new line, composed of surplus tobaccos from other blends.  They’ve emphasized that this is not the typical “Cuban sandwich” cigar, though.  It will be all long filler, but be rolled using this leftover tobacco.  The line will be an inexpensive bundle stick, retailing for about $2.75 to $3 per cigar, and will use the surplus from large purchases of leaf for other lines.  It will, however, consistently have an Ecuadoran Habano wrapper, Dominican binder and Nicaraguan fillers, and feature about 80% leftover leaf.  It’s called the “A Crop” and will come in 3 vitolas: 5”x50 robusto, 6”x52 toro, and 6”x58 gordo.

MBombay Tobak introduces new Habano Blend

May 11, 2015 By Kip Fisher

mbombay habano blendAfter a successful launch of their Connecticut Classic and Corojo Oscuro lines, MBombay Tobak has announced a new introduction into the marketplace.  The company will soon release a “medium bodied, flavor packed cigar” called the MBombay Habano.  The offering will be a part of their core line portfolio.

“It is our Passion as a Brand to create an enjoyable Experience for cigar smokers of all levels. It is our pleasure to create a medium bodied blend that truly encompasses the complexity and nuances a tasty cigar should provide.” ~ Mel Shah (Owner/Creator)

The new cigar will feature and Ecuadoran Habano wrapper over an Ecuadoran Criollo binder and filler tobacco from Nicaragua and Peru.  It will be available in five vitolas, including a corona, robusto, belicoso, churchill, and gordo.  Suggested retail pricing will range from $8.50 to $12.50, depending on size.

The MBombay Habano is a follow up to the company’s first year introductions listed above.  MBombay supports its retailers by refusing to allow for online sales of their cigars, and provides online marketing coverage for their accounts.  The company reports more than 65 retail accounts after its first year of production, and growth in the U.S. market.  More information can be found at: www.bombaytobak.com.

crowned heads jdh single action

Crowned Heads JD Howard Reserve Single Action

One of several 2015 LE’s from Crowned Heads, the Single Action was an addition to the JD Howard Reserve line.  Only about 2,000 boxes of 10 cigars were produced, and the cigar carries an MSRP of $9.25 per cigar (and they’re still out there if you’re interested).  It is a 6×38 petit lancero, featuring a Brazilian Arapiraca wrapper over Ecuador Sumatran binder and Nicaraguan fillers.  The line is produced by EP Carrillo in the Dominican Republic.  Carrying with the JD Howard theme, the cigar is named after Jesse James’ weapon of choice – the Colt Single Action.

News

I got some info on a new line from Luis Sanchez this week, called the Figurado Series.  It will initially be available in a single 5”x54 “Chulo” vitola, and two different wrappers -Ecuadoran (natural) and San Andres (maduro).  Filler leaf will include some of the tobacco grown by Luis and Terry Johnson at their DOMUSA farming operation in Villa Gonzalez, DR.  I did not get pricing information, but it should be stateside in the next couple of weeks.

AJ Fernandez is extending the New World line to include a Connecticut wrapped version.  The New World Connecticut will feature an American-grown CT shade wrapper, Mexican San Andres binder, and a filler mix of Nicaraguan and Brazilian leaf – which is very different from the standard New World (“Dark Nicaragua” wrapper over Jalapa binder and a filler blend of Viso Ometepe, Condega ligero, and Estelí-Finca Soledad ligero, and “Dark Nicaragua” wrapper).  It will be available in four vitolas – Corona Gorda (5.5×46), Robusto (5×50), Toro (6×52), and Belicoso (6×54).  Pricing will be in line with the existing New World lineup.

Following our recent mentions of a few pipe tobacco related items, I’m happy to report that Pete Johnson is working on some blends himself.  He posted up a pic of something he was smoking this week and commented that he was working on something new.  He said he hopes to have something by the tradeshow.  I asked where his focus might be in terms of the types of blends he was working on, and he said “Plan on more English and some English with some aromatic twists.”  If that’s the case, I’m all in for trying them out.  I’d love to see this project take on life.  I really hope he’s actually creating blends from the ground up, and not going through a bulk blending house and just mixing off some existing compositions.  Pete’s history, palate and following could really make this a boon to the pipe tobacco industry.  Time will tell…

A few weeks ago, we talked a bit about La Flor Dominicana’s novel idea for having TAA members vote on this year’s TAA LE with their pocketbooks.  The gathering is over, orders placed and a winner selected.  The winning cigar is the 5.5” x 52 robusto.  The line features an Ecuadoran habano wrapper, Mexican binder, and Dominican fillers.  MSRP is about $9 per stick, and it should arrive on retailers’ shelves in about a month – assuming you have a TAA member retailer in your neck of the woods.

Following the lead of several municipalities around the state, Florida’s capital Tallahassee is looking to make it harder on employees who smoke.  An intent has been announced to end the hiring of any tobacco users, and prohibiting tobacco/e-cig use in all govt owned buildings, vehicles, etc. – even during break times.  Hiring changes would go into effect July 1, 2015, while other aspects would be phased in over the next two years (including a $20 fee [and it’s not an increased insurance premium….it’s a fee]from employees’ paychecks if they smoke).

A follow up to a program we previously discussed called Cigar Sense. Back in November we (Craig) had some choice words for a few of the statistics they shared from a survey of 400+ cigar smokers they recently spoke with. We saw some irregularities and downright confusing data being thrown about and rightfully scratched our head when trying to make heads or tails out of it. That same organization has just today discussed that they are using a “control” group of over 1,200 cigar reviews to provide a database to help smokers pinpoint sticks that will line up with their palate. The rub here is that the program determines what will fit your tastes based upon what else you like. Check out cigarsense.com for some cool introductions into the program and to formulate some of your own opinions.

Cigar News: La Tradicion Cubana shipping Figurado Series

April 23, 2015 By Kip Fisher

la tradicion cubana figurado seriesLuis Sanchez at La Tradicion Cubana has provided more information on a new line he has arriving in the very near future.  Regular Half Ashed listeners will recognize Luis’ name from frequent mentions on the show whenever Craig and I have delved into our LTC supply.  Both Craig and I are fans of his work, and both regular purchase La Tradicion products for our own humidors.  For those interested, some of our favorites include the TL Johnson Tempio and most recently the La Tradicion Cubana Reserva Familiar…as well as the corona in his original La Tradicion Cubana line.    In June of 2013, we also featured the Tempio on Episode 021 when we had guest Terry Johnson on the show.

The new line is to be called the Figurado Series, and for the time being will only come in a singular 5” x 54 “Chulo” vitola.  As  is obvious from the series name and accompanying picture, it is a figurado.  Both a natural and maduro version will be available, and features the blend composition given below.

The wrapper will be either Ecuadoran (natural) or San Andres (maduro), with Dominican filler tobacco.  Interestingly, the filler tobacco was grown by Sanchez and partner Terry Johnson of TL Johnson Cigars through their DOMUSA farming company.  Their tobacco has begun to show up in a couple of their recent blends, and the operation has been in the works for the past three years.  How extensively the two will utilize their own tobacco in the future is yet to be seen, but based on initial results my interest is piqued to say the least.

The La Tradicion Cubana Figurado Series should be available to U.S. retailers’ shelves within the next couple of weeks.

Quesada España Ninfa

Welcome to Half Ashed Episode 106, featuring the Quesada España Ninfa as our Cigar of the Week.  This week’s cigar was one of Craig’s selections, and he has this to say about it:

In 2011 my life changed. My wife was expecting our first child and I was planning all of the Dad-to-be things we were going to do together later in life. One of those things was which box of cigars I was going to share upon my son’s birth; and with him later in life. In February of that year, I started down the path to figuring that out. I had just arrived in Santiago, DR on my first trip to the Dominican. It was to be a cigar filled, last hurrah before fatherhood settled things down a bit. At the MATASA factory I sat in a room listening to Manolo Quesada talk about the prototype cigar I was smoking. That cigar was a Robusto Espana and months before my son Luke was born, I vowed to make these cigars part of the birth of any & all of my future children. In May of that year I bought a box of Robustos and later followed it up with a box of Coronas to celebrate my second son, Liam.

Tonight’s CotW is a different vitola from this very special line; the Ninfa. A “pencil” sized cigar, these check in at 6-⅞”x32. An Ecuadorian Arapiraca wraps a Dominican binder and DR/Nica filler. These cigars are filled with beautiful cocoa, Tea and spice flavors and definitely bring a minor pepper note as well. They need to be smoked with a delicate touch but reward mightely if you behave.  They’re part of Quesada’s “12 boxes for 12 retailers” project where they give one box of special Espanas to one different retailer, each month for a year. These are from the 2014 release and are from Winston’s Humidor in Midlothian, Virginia. Side note: Kevin Edmiston was on the trip with me in the Dominican where we sampled the pre-release Espanas. We were guests of Cigar Tourism (Colin Ganley, Twin Engines coffee) and enjoyed a spectacular visit.

News

Burns Tobacconist in Chattanooga has a new owner and a new shop-exclusive in the wings.  Tobacconist Mike Hunter has obtained part ownership in the home of the Chattanooga Tweet Up, and was an integral part of orchestrating La Aurora’s partnering with them for the Cien Años lancero.  The cameroon-wrapped cigar is 7.5”x40, the same as the original Cien Años production, and features the same blend.  MSRP is set at $11.99 per stick in boxes of 25.

Pete Johnson teased a new event sampler that’s coming in the next few weeks.  It will feature 5, 5.5”x52 robustos from the La Riqueza, Tat Black, Havana VI, Cabaiguan and Tattoo lines, housed in one of the Tatuaje melamine ashtrays (not a fan of those ashtrays, personally).  It will initially be available for sale at Tatuaje events, but could become more widely available later.  Pricing TBA.

In what is probably pretty normal but seems like strange bedfellows to me, Romeo y Julieta has partnered with Boutique Blends to produce their next line – the Romeo by Romeo y Julieta Aging Room.  It will be made at Jochy Blanco’s Las Palmas factory in the Dominican Republic and will be available in three vitolas – 5×48 Copla, 6×54 Capriccio, and 6×52 Cantaor.  Total production is set at about 250,000 cigars, which will retail around the $10 mark.  The line will launch in April, and will be distributed by Altadis.

As posted earlier this week on Half Ashed, Viva Republica has released a special event cigar for the DC Tweet Up – a culebra.  While culebras are nothing new, I love the fact that this one features one of each from the Viva Republica core lines (Rapture, Guerrilla Warfare, and Rapture Maduro).  The cigars will be 5.75”x39, and will retail for $18 per set (=$6/cigar).  Only 1,000 sets will be made available.

We spoke a bit about Viaje last week, and in the time since they announced two upcoming releases, The Señor Andres’ Chicharrones and The Jalapeño.  The Chicharrones is interesting in that the line is actually 3 different cigars.  They feature similar blends, but with differing wrappers (Nicaraguan corojo, criollo and maduro).  The 4.5”x48 sticks will be made at TABSA using all-AGANORSA tobacco.  The Jalapeño is a 4.875”x51 figurado out of Raices Cubana.  No specifics about the blend were released.

L’Atelier is releasing a new line called the Cote D’Or (Gold Coast) next month.  There will be a soft launch at Federal Cigar’s 94th Anniversary this week, but full launch will come in April.  It will reportedly be a soft-pressed churchill, blended around Pelo D’Oro.  Only a couple thousand boxes will be produced, and the line will retail around $16 per cigar.

What We’ve Been Smoking

Craig

Club Havana Laguito #2 – Young but beautiful. I can’t wait to smoke them on the show. More appropriately, I can’t wait for Kip to smoke them!

Espana Corona – My son Liam was born in December of 2013. I forgot to smoke my first Espana Corona from his box around his birthday so I’m doing it this week to celebrate the impending close of a hellacious professional project.

Kip

Don Pepin Garcia Blue – I learned some interesting revelations about myself concerning the lancero, toro, and robusto….
