Cigar of the Week: Unbanded 019

Good day, folks!  Welcome to Episode 095 of Half Ashed, featuring Unbanded #019, suggested by listener Dan Crouch.  Without giving away too much information, both Craig and I were completely fooled by this cigar.  More so than any past Unbanded.  It was a great smoke, and the reveal surprised us both profoundly.  With a solid track record in the past, I suppose it was past due for us to fall flat on our faces with one…

News

In the news, we covered several items, including:

  • The HR Habano has launched – we talked of this a couple months ago; it is the collaboration between Alejandro Robaina’s grandson Hirochi and Omar Aleman of Cubanacan.  The line comes in 4 vitolas, and features a Ec. Habano wrapper over Jalapa binder and Nicaraguan fillers.  It’s available at Cubanacan Platinum accounts (somewhere around 30 stores), and retails for $19-22 per stick….pretty steep, but the feedback has been very good that I’ve seen so far.  Still…
  • Halfwheel has a story out of San Francisco that should stand our hairs up.  The city passed legislation this week that effectively eliminates the ability to open a tobacconist.  There are currently 1,000 permitted tobacco sellers, but the new law limits permits to 45 for each of the city’s 11 districts (total 495).  While they won’t go back and cancel any existing permits, whenever a business closes it’s permit is gone if there are 45 others in that district.  The act goes on to specify that NO new permits will be issued for tobacco shops (tobacco shop = “any retailer whose principle business is selling tobacco products, tobacco paraphernalia, or both” and where 70% of gross sales receipts are derived from the sale of tobacco products or 50% of completed sales transactions includes a tobacco product or paraphernalia. “  STORY HERE
  • Skip Martin posted up a pic of a blending sample for an upcoming cigar celebrating Esteban’s 25 years in tobacco….Esteban is his right hand man in the Nicaraguan operation, managing much of the day-to-day operations.
  • AVO is freshening up a bit.  They will be rebranding the whole lineup in early 2015.  New packaging, new boxes, and the elimination of the Signature & Maduro lines (buy ‘em up if you like ‘em).  Finally, we’ll see price drops of $.10 to $2.40 per stick.  I personally have wondered what’s going on with the lineup, after seeing countless “blow-out deals” on this year’s LE, and just this week my local has the AVO Greatest Hits sampler (all the LE’s but one) on clearance for $126.95 (orig price = $194.95).  I don’t think I’ve seen any taken from the stack they initially received….
  • The Ezra Zion guys are busily working on 2015 as well.  They put up a pic of a prototype simply labeled “Unicos #2 // Mexico” this week.  I imagine it’s another San Andres wrapped cigar, but I’m still anxious to give it a whirl….PICTURE
  • Finally, we talked a bit about this year’s “Top ??” lists from various sources….some interesting things going on there.

What Have We Been Smoking?

Our extra-curricular smoking this week was fairly subdued, with only a couple entries from Craig (Padron Aniversario 1964 Principe and the Herrera Esteli Norteño) and one from me (La Tradicion Cubana Reserva Familiar).  We also gave a bit of attention to ongoing changes with the website and forum.

Listener Email

We covered one email this week, from Officer Paul…tune in to get the details on that.

Wrap Up

In the next episode we will be featuring the illusione Fume D’Amour, so be sure to check back in Friday night at 9:30pm EST on halfashed.com where you can catch us recording and participate in the new and much improved chatroom.  If you would like to contact us in the meantime, you can reach us through the contact page or at the following emails: [email protected] or [email protected]. Please feel free to drop us a line if you have any questions you’d like answered, comments to make…or even compliments and complaints.  We love to get your emails!  Also, remember you can always go back and listen to previous episodes, which can be found in the Half Ashed Archive.  You can download this week’s audio directly below (right-click “Download” and save), find us on iTunes, or subscribe with any podcast app at our RSS Feed.  Video, as always, will be available at the Half Ashed YouTube Channel.

Half Ashed Episode 091: Tatuaje Belle Encre Reserva

Welcome back for another fun-filled, exciting episode of Half Ashed!  This marks the 91st episode of the show, and features the Tatuaje Belle Encre Reserva as our Cigar of the Week.  The cigar was one of Kip’s selections, and he described it thusly:

The Tatuaje Belle Encre Reserva was a limited run of the Belle Encre (5 ⅜” x 48 perfecto), featuring a CT Broadleaf wrapper rather than the Ecuadoran Habano found on the standard line.  It’s packed with the same internal components as the regular line (Nicaraguan throughout).  This was released early this year as part of the 10th Anniversary product lineup from Tatuaje, and features the 10th Anniversary band.  The standard Habano-wrapped version will continue, although the Reserva was limited, and may or may not see the light of day once again.  These retailed at ~$11/stick, which was about $1 more per cigar than the standard line.  Total production was just under 2000 boxes of 22 (just shy of 44k cigars).  I did a brief comparison of the two back in May 2014.

In the news, we covered items from Smoke Inn’s Microblend Series, Casa Fernandez, Villiger, and Davidoff.  Legislatively, there were stories from Nebraska and Massachusetts.  As always, we wrapped up with what we’ve been smoking, talked through the ongoing upgrades to Half Ashed and covered a listener email from Ian Winchester.

In the next episode we will be featuring one of Kip’s favorites, the My Father #4 Lancero.  Be sure to check back in Friday night at 9:30pm EST on halfashed.com where you can catch us recording and participate in the new and much improved chatroom.

Unbanded 018

I apologize for such a late (2 weeks) post of this episode…..which means, by the way, that you’ll be getting TWO episodes in rapid succession this week.  I’ve been pretty tied up with preparing for my upcoming move.  Here is a brief wrap-up of Episode 083, featuring Unbanded #018, generously furnished by zedman.

News

The 2015 CFC dates have been announced by Fuente…

Don Pepin has revived the El Rey do Los Habanos line to release as a shop specific cigar for The Pipe and Pint in Greensboro, NC.  Five sizes in 23-count boxes; estimated to retail between $8-11 per stick.

Nomad will be offering a lancero in their CT Fuerte line….presented as Fred Rewey’s personal cigar.  He says these were previously just rolled for him, and that he wants to share them with the rest of us…..EC Hab//EC CT//DR & Nica.

The Nebraska AG has requested the court to reconsider their decision to declare the existing exemption for cigar bars as unconstitutional.  These requests are rarely accepted, but will at least delay the formalization of the decision for several weeks.  If accepted, the case would take several more months to get through the process of review.  As a sidenote, I read there are only 11 cigar bars in the entire state of NE!!! dogwatch Cigar Radio logoGood afternoon, folks.  Welcome back to another episode of Half Ashed.  This week, Kip was in Tennessee to attend a family funeral – so our buddy Bob McDuffee (of Dogwatch Cigar Radio fame) sat in with Craig.  The two of them covered a few news items, including stories from La Flor Dominicana, Cohiba, JC Newman and the FDA. They also covered a full run-down of Bob’s opinion of the state of the industry with regard to IPCPR as an organization.  You’ll definitely want to check in for that.  Of course, they talked a bit about what they’ve been smoking as well.

**It should be noted that they had a bit of a technical difficulty mid-show.  Only a couple of minutes of Bob’s fine pontification was lost, but you’ll notice it nonetheless.***

Episode 079 will feature the other respective halves of the two shows – Kip and Dale.  So, be sure and tune in for that next Friday night at 9:30pm EST on halfashed.com where you can catch us recording and participate in the chatroom. You can download this week’s audio directly below (right-click “Download” and save), or find us on iTunes to subscribe.  Video, as always, will be available at the CigFed Half Ashed Video Archive.

Fuente from CFC2014This week on Half Ashed, we’re smoking a very special Fuente cigar, given out at CFC2014.  Tune in to get the full details about it, but here’s a spoiler: we loved it.  We had quite a bit of news to cover, including items from FDA, General Cigars’ Dunhill, 1502 Cigars, Herrera Esteli, Drew Estate, Luis Sanchez, and a bit more trouble for former Swisher executive Alex Goldman.  We also discussed what else we’ve been smoking this week and several listener emails.  Keep ’em coming!

In an unfortunate turn, our latest attempt at revamping our chatroom experienced a setback at showtime, and we had to punt with the chatroom.  We will be back online with the chat this Friday night.  We’ve contracted with a provider to offload the server load to cloudservers, so we shouldn’t have any further difficulties.  Just follow the instructions on the front page of halfashed.com.  Thanks for checking in, and we look forward to you joining us Friday night!

Next week, our Cigar of the Week will be a very special cigar from Craig’s provided featured cigars, so be sure to check back in next Friday night at 9:30pm EST at Cigar Federation ****We will temporarily only have chat access on our Show Page on halfashed.com.  We have outgrown our previous chat, and it has been overloading the server and causing various and sundry issues with our hosting provider.  In fact, they shut down our site this week during the show.  I have installed a stopgap chat for the time being, but it will not frame into the Cigar Federation page.  We will remedy this as soon as possible.****, where you can catch us recording and participate in the chatroom. You can download this week’s audio directly below (right-click “Download” and save), or find us on iTunes to subscribe.  Video, as always, will be available at the CigFed Half Ashed Video Archive.

Half Ashed Episode 063: Unbanded 014

UnbandedHello, everyone. Welcome to Episode 063 of Half Ashed, featuring Unbanded #014 as our Cigar of The Week. This particular cigar was supplied by long time friend of the show Maria Elena González.  Here is just a sampling of a few items covered in Episode 063:

News

Barry Stein commented on his future plans in returning to cigar media, and hinted at some future potential for the Kilo (hoowahh!).

Oliva has begun shipping the extensions to their Melanio Maduro line.

Kevin Paige of acigarsmoker.com is reporting that La Sirena is moving production from My Father & La Aurora to Erik Espinosa’s La Zona factory.

The focus of our news conversation tonight was the FDA’s “Deeming document” concerning their intentions toward regulating premium cigars.  At the heart of the matter is: 1. whether or not premium cigars will fall under the same classification as other tobacco products, and 2. the definition of a “premium” cigar.  Tune in to get the full scoop.  To summarize, for those who have any desire to continue smoking cigars, I’d strongly advise you to pay attention here.  This is the “other shoe” we’ve been waiting to drop for several years.  The time is now.  You can find an excellent summation of the document at halfwheel, and submit your comment to the powers that be HERE for the next 75 days (through July 9th, 2014.

Other

In “What We’ve Been Smoking” this week, Craig gushed about what he considers one popular manufacturer’s Magnum Opus (and no, it’s not a Fuente).  We covered a few more pedestrian smokes as well

There were a couple of embarrassing stories about myself thrown in for good measure this week….

We wrapped up with a fantastic listener email from Louis Alvarez.  He made some excellent points we were happy to discuss on the show.  Following that, we gave the final wrap on this week’s Unbanded….and I have to admit I was floored when I saw what it actually was.  Thanks again to Maria Elena González for supplying it.

Next Episode

Next week, our Cigar of the Week will be a very special Fuente stick given out at CFC2014.  We know little about it, except it’s roughly the same vitola as a Hemingway Classic, and carries their “prototype” X band and a secondary “Destino al Siglo” band.  Be sure to check back in next Friday night at 9:30pm EST at Cigar Federation ****We will temporarily only have chat access on our Show Page on halfashed.com. You can download this week’s audio directly below (right-click “Download” and save), or find us on iTunes to subscribe.  Video, as always, will be available at the CigFed Half Ashed Video Archive.

dogwatch Cigar Radio logoWelcome to Episode 045, everyone. I apologize for the delay in getting this week’s show posted. I’ve been excessively busy with the ol’ dayjob, and quite honestly it was more important to me to spend what little other time I had playing rummy with my kids :). This week, Craig was not available, for good reason. He was busy welcoming the newest Li’l Schneider into the world (Congrats to the Schnedier family). I was lucky enough to have Dale Roush of Dogwatch Cigar Radio fame join me for an especially relaxed show. We each smoked a cigar that we wanted to share with the audience (you’ll have to listen to find out what they were). We began the show with some sad news this week, as we offered condolences on the recent passing of Myrna Sherman, wife of Joel, CEO of Nat Sherman Intl.  In cigar related news, we covered stories from Drew Estate, Ashton, and Eddie Ortega.  We also covered a third burglary at a South Florida cigar warehouse, and a number of important legislative items.

Both Dale and I talked about several interesting cigars we’ve smoked lately, and were able to just hang out and chat, smoke, and talk cigars.  A big thanks to him for sitting in with me; it is always a pleasure when he and/or Bob McDuffee can join in on Half Ashed.

Next week, Craig will be returning and our Cigar of the Week will be Unbanded 011, from Jacob Pinkas.  Be sure to check back in next Friday night at 9:30pm EST at Cigar Federation (details on locating the show will be on the front page that evening an hour before showtime), where you can catch us recording and participate in the chatroom.  If you would like to contact us in the meantime, you can reach us through the contact page or at the following email addresses: [email protected] or [email protected].  Please feel free to drop us a line if you have any questions you’d like answered, comments to make…or even compliments and complaints.  We love to get your emails!  Also, remember you can always go back and listen to previous episodes, which can be found in the Half Ashed Archive.  You can download this week’s audio directly below (right-click “Download” and save), or find us on iTunes to subscribe.  Video, as always, will be available at the CigFed Half Ashed Video Archive.

Half Ashed Episode 034: Ramon Allones Gigante

Ramon AllonesOn this week’s Half Ashed, we took the opportunity to smoke a cigar from one of Craig’s favorite manufacturers – a 2001 Ramon Allones Gigante.  We have covered this marque before, when we smoked the petit corona back on Episode 022 and the 2005 Edicion Regional on Episode 005 (pictured at left, because I failed to snap a picture of this week’s cigar).  Craig presented tonight’s cigar thusly:

This cigar has waited to be smoked for 12 years since it left its original place of manufacture in Havana.  That amount of time typically suits the Ramon Allones blend nicely by tempering some of the initial nicotine strength to the point that the traditional nutty, sweet coffee flavors can emerge. This is still a strong cigar; perhaps the strongest of all Cuban Double Coronas, but is never out of balance. The punchy youth just morphs into a robust maturity. Of all the larger ring gauge cigars this one tends to be the most complex.

Tune in to the show for updates throughout the smoke to see how that went.  We also covered several items of news this week, including the following:

As reported by halfwheel, Iconic Leaf is suing Kurt Kendall (7-20-4) over the trademarked use of a spider on cigar packaging….

A recent ruling in Nebraska opens the door to ban smoking….in cigar lounges.

Guayacan is expanding their lineup, in an extension to the existing line and a new maduro offering.

The GAR Deli is open!  Total cost is $250 – per GAR, “This includes all of your samples, the workshop, and your box of cigars.  George will sit down with you and give you a fascinating informational seminar to guide you through the process of constructing a well-balanced cigar.  He will discuss the tobacco growing process and give the customer useful background information on how this process influences the flavor of a cigar.  Once you have made your tobacco selections, it takes the rollers a few hours to put your custom blend together.  You can usually take them with you the same day or you can return the following day to pick them up.  Your box can also be shipped to you.”

GAR also just announced the addition of the GAR Red to the lineup.  Reportedly a medium-full bodied stick that is available in 3 size – 6×60, 6×66, and 7×70.  Nicaraguan puro w/Habano wrapper, Jalapa binder, & Habano/corojo filler.  Price is a major selling point on these, with the 7×70 coming in at a $5 MSRP.

Barry Stein reports that he’s trying samples of a 6X60 KILO…..and tells me that there will be a corona!  Hoowahh!

Gary Griffith is implementing a new idea with retailers – the opportunity to become House of Emilio “Master Retailers.”  I posted this press release in an earlier post at The Cigarmy.

Democratic Senator Robert Menendez of NJ has signed on as a co-sponsor of S.772.  This is a big deal – Every Senator sponsorship is quite important and carries a lot of weight.

Also in this episode, we review what we’ve been smoking lately and a number of various and sundry ratholes….as well as a listener email from Enzo Temko.

Next week, our Cigar of the Week might be the Fuente Unnamed Reserve from this past December….I say “might” because we changed plans up in the final minutes of the show, and there is an outside chance it may change again.  In any event, be sure to check back in for that next Friday at 9:30pm EST at www.halfashed.com. Video, as always, will be available at the CigFed Half Ashed Video Archive.

dogwatch Cigar Radio logoEpisode 032

Good afternoon, everyone!  Welcome to another week and another episode of Half Ashed, this being Episode 032.  Yes, we’ve managed to make it another week without being booed, chased, or otherwise kicked off the internet.  Craig was out of town this week, and I had the good fortune of getting Dale Roush & Bob McDuffee on as special guests.  Bob & Dale – or the godfathers of cigar podcasting as I like to call them, were the hosts of Dogwatch Cigar Radio for 8 years, ending the show at the end of 2012 with 410 episodes.  I owe much to them, including the impetus for Half Ashed, and truly appreciate them taking time out of their schedules to sit in with me to hang out and catch up.  It’s always a special treat to visit with the guys, and this week’s show is no exception.  Here’s a brief summary of some of the topics we covered…

Cigar of the Week

The Cigar of the Week was an impromptu unbanded stick I sent to the guys just to get their opinions about…not to ruin the surprise, you’ll have to tune in to find out what it was and what they thought of it.

News Items

    • The Cigar Federation charity raffle a total of $5,680!  That’s an amazing turnout, especially for a first run at something of this nature.  A big thanks to the guys over there who coordinated the raffle and put in all the work to make it happen.
    • It’s Padron’s 49th Birthday!
    • The Factory Fresh from Wynwood Cigars – we talked about the idea behind the Factory Fresh, and some of the pros/cons with such a project.
    • The Davidoff Nicaraguan…..good? meh?  worthwhile?  How does their first foray into a Nicaraguan cigar stand up to their typical Dominican offerings?
    • Some “Nanny news” from an NPR story Bob heard.
    • The “Royal Monkey Cigar Society.”  You’ll have to tune in to get that story!

Other Items

What we’ve been smoking….the guys haven’t let up since ending Dogwatch.  They’re still alive and kicking – and smoking plenty of cigars

Listener email – we take a question from Swede214 about tooth in a cigar wrapper….complete with visual aids :).

Wrap

Next week, we’ll return to a normal programming schedule.  The Cigar of the Week will be an Unbanded, number 009, from Jacob Pinkas (Thanks Jacob!).

P.S. – If you have unbanded suggestions or contributions, you can get those to us by sending an email to [email protected].  This email address goes directly to my wife, so you can simply suggest an unbanded cigar for her to source, or send me an email to [email protected] if you have something you’d like to send in.  I will provide an address to send them.  Thanks!

Nadi CigarsWelcome to another episode of Half Ashed.  I’m glad you’ve joined us again this week as we host guests Jeff and Nada Jumper of Nadi Cigars.  We’re spotlighting their line of cigars, Nadi, but you may be interested in knowing that the two of them have extensive involvement in the cigar community as a whole – making the rounds to a considerable number of cigar events, blogging, publishing YouTube cigar reviews, as well as managing the day to day aspects of owning a boutique cigar line (you can find Nadi Cigars on Twitter as well).  We’ve smoked both their original Habano Classic line, as well as the Connecticut this week.  Tune in to find our thoughts about them.

Also during the show, we take advantage of having our guests’ knowledge of the industry available to discuss current news and happenings around the world of premium cigars, a charity raffle going on over at Cigar Federation, and a couple of upcoming releases we’re anxious to get our hands on when they hit the shelves.

We all shared what we’ve been smoking this week – both impressive sticks, and those not-so-impressive.  We once again had to postpone answering some listener emails, but will definitely cover those next week when we return to a normal schedule.

Next week, we’ll be featuring the illusione ECCJ as out Cigar of the Week, so be sure to check back in then to see what it has to offer.

Thanks!
