half ashed logoWelcome back!  Craig and I were both recuperating from illness last week, so after making the first 46 in a row we had to miss an episode.  But, we’re back this week, smoking the Cabaiguan Maduro as our Cigar of the Week.  This is one of Craig’s favorites, but tune in and see how well his palate has recovered after two weeks of healing.

In the news this week ,we covered stories from 1502 Cigars, General Cigar’s new collaboration with Jay-Z, Ezra Zion, and Quesada.  We also talked over an article from the UK Telegraph which speculated that cigar smoking as a whole could die off within the next 12 years.  We did go ahead and talk over what we’ve been smoking – which amounts to very little with the recent illnesses.  What we did discuss some was how we observed the evolution of a palate back to a normal state.  Surprisingly, this has taken me far longer than I would have ever dreamed.  A full 9 days after I felt healthy, I am still experiencing some difference between expectation and reality in cigars with which I am quite familiar.  Additionally, we editorialized over a couple of recent observations I’ve made about the industry in general.  Lastly, we made up ground from last week and announced each of our favorite 10 cigars from 2013 – with some caveats.  It’s our list, so we get to make the rules :).

1. These are not necessarily new cigars for the year (although some were), but the cigars we simply enjoyed the most throughout.

2.  We limited the selection to cigars that were either Cigars of the Week for Half Ashed Episodes, or were discussed enough to have been made mention in the show notes.  If we did not talk about it during at least one episode, it was not considered for our lists.

3.  I (Kip) purposefully removed the Fuente cigars we smoked (858 Sungrown, Unnamed Reserve (2012), and Casa Cuba) from consideration out of my known affinity (sheer bias) for Fuente products.

4.  There were a number of cigars that probably should have made the list, and were discussed in the show as honorable mentions/best values/”we just couldn’t narrow it down” cigars.  These were: Miami Cigar/Nestor Miranda Casa Miranda Chapter Two; Drew Estate Nica Rustica; illusione ECCJ; Reinado Grand Empire Reserve; Michael Stewart’s Fire Cured #7

unbandedHalf Ashed Episode 036: Unbanded 010

Good afternoon, and welcome back for another episode of Half Ashed.  This week, for episode 036, we’re smoking an unbanded submission from Steve Dorau (Thanks, Steve!).  In news, we cover stories from Drew Estate, upcoming cigar festivities for anyone in the central Florida area, the education I recently received in Chicago tobacco taxes (yikes!), Sotolongo Cigars, Miami Cigar, Emilio and Emilio-distributed Nomad Cigars, as well as the upcoming availability of a budget pipe tobacco.

We also cover what we’ve been smoking (a few goodies for me, and one that just wasn’t in Craig’s sweetspot), cigar etiquette, and an update on my attempts at putting together a new website.  Additionally, we did get to a couple of emails and notes we’ve gotten from folks that have been quite generous and kind toward the show.  Thanks to all for that, we really appreciate the encouragement.

Next week, our Cigar of the Week will be a surprise, at this point even to us.  Be sure to check back in for that next Friday at 9:30pm EST at www.halfashed.com.  If you would like to contact us in the meantime, you can reach us through the contact page or at the following email addresses: [email protected] or [email protected].  Please feel free to drop us a line if you have any questions you’d like answered, comments to make…or even compliments and complaints.  We love to get your emails!  Also, remember you can always go back and listen to previous episodes, which can be found in the Half Ashed Archive.  You can download this week’s audio directly below (right-click “Download” and save), or find us on iTunes to subscribe.  Video, as always, will be available at the CigFed Half Ashed Video Archive.

fuente unnamed reserveHalf Ashed Episode 035: Fuente Unnamed Reserve

Welcome to another fun-filled episode of Half Ashed!  This week, we’re taking a look at an unexpected (at the time) release from the Fuente family – the Unnamed Reserve.  When this cigar showed up on select retailers’s shelves in December of 2012, little was known about it other than the facts that it was somewhat limited in scope and contained some mixture of the Don Carlos blend with a Sungrown wrapper.  Join us as we enjoy a couple of the last few remaining in my humidor.

We also cover several news items, including the announcement of Tatuaje’s “Unlucky 13” retailers for 2013 (see article and poll over on The Cigarmy), a really cool Miami Cigar promotion going on tomorrow (October 7th), a scheduled timeframe for this year’s Serie V Maduro release from Oliva, and George Rodriguez’s take on bringing the consumer into the loop in blend development.

Additionally, Craig and I discuss what we’ve been smoking, a couple of associated cigar interest topics, and a few of this week’s outstanding listener emails.  Join us for all the Friday night fun….

Next week, our Cigar of the Week will be Unbanded #008, provided by Steve Dorau.  Be sure to check back in for that next Friday at 9:00pm EST at www.halfashed.com.

News: Tatuaje "Unlucky 13" and a Poll

September 30, 2013 By Kip Fisher

Tatuaje Monster no. 6 - JasonThis afternoon, Tatuaje announced (via Facebook) the “Unlucky 13.”  These are the 13 Tatuaje retailers allotted a shipment of the extremely limited dress boxes of this year’s edition of the Monster Series.  The 2013 release, the sixth edition, will be known as No. 6 – or “Jason”, in reference to the central fictional character of the same name in the Friday the 13th movie franchise.  The packaging, shown at left, will be themed with a hockey mask (à la the movie-bound Jason) and the number 6.  The “Unlucky 13” are listed below, but expect them to have already allotted their expected delivery of dress boxes….and possibly even have a long waiting list “just in case.”  There are only 666 of these decorated 13-count boxes available, and demand is very high.  But never fear – a larger release of the plain, 10-count boxes will be arriving at many other Tatuaje accounts as well.  These will also be in high demand, but far easier to get your hands on.

Unlucky 13 Retailers:

  1. Buttheads Tobacco Emporium, Danbury, CT
  2. Prime Cigar and Wine Bar, Boca Raton, FL
  3. Town & Country Cigar Bar, Euless, TX
  4. Havana House, Akron, OH
  5. Fine Ash Cigars, Avondale, AZ
  6. Union Cigar Society, Seattle, WA
  7. Liberty Tobacco, San Diego, CA
  8. Atlantic Cigar Co, Folcroft, PA
  9. Don Francisco Cigars, East Brunswick, NJ
  10. Humidor Pipe Shop, Huntsville, AL
  11. Tobacco Shoppe of Midland, Midland, MI
  12. Cigar Master, Boston, MA
  13. Leesburg Cigar and Pipe, Leesburg, VA

The list was previously made available to members of Tatuaje’s Saints N Sinners club, where the fervor has been very high as expected.  As I’ve watched the public run wild via Facebook & Twitter this afternoon I have come across a number of both detractors and fans of the dress box phenomena.  Personally, I will occasionally go out of my way to track down and pay a premium for a rare cigar, although it’s certainly not the norm.  Monster fans love it, as it’s a chance to chase down an elusive limited edition; detractors declare they have no desire to do so because of all the hubbub and work involved with only a slim chance for success.

Generally, I can see the detractors’ point with limited edition runs of cigars.  It’s just too difficult, time consuming, and expensive to go chase them all down.  And what comes next if you get them?  Should you find a new favorite, there’s no future in it because you won’t be able to get them again anyway.  Where you fall on this is likely dependent on whether you’d rather have loved than lost, or never have loved at all.

However, I feel differently with this series.  The big differentiator here is the fact that the extreme limitation is on packaging, not the cigars.  Someone who wants the opportunity to smoke a cigar from the Monster Series should have little trouble finding them – the plain boxes, while also limited, are within reach of anyone with the slightest bit of ambition.  I can appreciate the compromise.  That’s why we’re all in this hobby, right?  The cigars?  I understand the collectors’ standpoint…but I’m here for the cigars.  I don’t smoke the boxes….

So, I’ll put the question to you fine folks…how do you feel about Limited Edition offerings?  Just to make this a little easier for those conflicted folks, I’ve left the option open for you to select 2 choices in the poll below.

Episode 033: Unbanded 009

half ashed logoWelcome to Episode 033 of Half Ashed, everyone.  This week, we’re smoking Unbanded 009, provided by Jacob Pinkas (thank you Jacob!).  In news, we covered the departure of IPCPR CEO Bill SPann, a massive and unfortunate theft at the Alec Bradley warehouse, and upcoming/current releases from Jesus Fuego, Crowned Heads, Tatuaje, Barry Stein (Miami Cigar), and a Sons of Anarchy cigar….

There were several great (and a couple not so great) cigars from the “what have we been smoking” segment, and we kicked around some ideas that the both of us have been pondering and pontificating about recently as well.

Next week, our Cigar of the Week will be the Ramon Allones Gigante – so be sure to check back in for that Friday at 9:30pm EST at www.halfashed.com.

P.S. – If you have unbanded suggestions or contributions, you can get those to us by sending an email to [email protected].  This email address goes directly to my wife, so you can simply suggest an unbanded cigar for her to source, or send me an email to [email protected] if you have something you’d like to send in.  I will provide an address to send them.  Thanks!

Sam Leccia - Leccia TobaccoGood day, folks and welcome back for another episode of Half Ashed.  Craig and I appreciate you stopping by.  We were honored to have Sam Leccia, of Leccia Tobacco, as a special guest this week to talk about his upcoming new cigar releases.  We talk with Sam about his Black and White lines, which will be released in about a month or so.  He was gracious enough to share some information about himself, his blending philosophy, the vision behind the new cigars, and provided a great deal of insight into the Black and White.  Thanks to Sam for taking the time to hang out and share with us all.

Tatuaje Mexican Experiment

Tatuaje Mexican Experiment robustoOur featured cigar this week was the Tatuaje LE Mexican Experiment, which was a limited run of cigars released by Pete Johnson last year.  I reviewed the cigar at that time, and it was very interesting to note how it had changed in the past 10 months or so.  It was a phenomenal cigar, and one which I would personally love to see in regular production.

In legislative news, we covered the (probably temporary) fail of the Florida outdoor smoking ban, and new tobacco tax proposals at the federal level.  We also quickly covered some interesting cigar news concerning new releases and trimming of the old from Davidoff, and a few items in our “What have we been smoking” segment for the week.  Finally, we wrapped up with a listener email or two, and some new video reviews posted on Cigar Federation by Michael Stewart for the cigars he won in our previous giveaway.  We thank you for stopping by, and I hope you’ll give us a listen or watch the video via the means below.  Have a great week!

Upcoming Shows

Next week, we feature the “E” as the Cigar of the Week – an interesting and sure to be enjoyable release from BOTL, LLC.  On our next live show (May 10th), we will host the Ezra Zion guys to tell us about their upcoming Limited Edition – the Tantrum.  The following week, we’ll have a visit with Will Cooper (Cigar Coop) as well.  Again, thanks for tuning in, and be sure to check back in next week.  In the meantime, if you would like to contact us you can reach us through the contact page or at the following email addresses: [email protected] or [email protected].  Also, don’t forget to go back and listen to previous episodes, which can be found in the Half Ashed Archive.  You can download this week’s audio directly below (right-click “Download” and save), or find us on iTunes.  Video, as always, will be available on Half Ashed YouTube Channel.
