Unbanded 024

A traditional 6.5″ x 42 Lonsdale vitola with a slightly green tinged claro wrapper and a simple triple cap. The wrapper appears “dry” and mildly toothy.

News

TL Johnson and La Tradicion Cubana have – from all outward appearances – parted ways amicably.  This was announced by posts to both companies’ social media accounts.  TL Johnson will additionally be opening a factory in the Dominican Republic to manufacture their own cigars and the Counsellor line that was announced this past year.  They will also be providing manufacturing capacity for custom cigar production as the need arises.

Casa Fernandez and relative newcomer Warped have announced a new cigar to be released at this year’s IPCPR.  The Futuro is being promoted as something “different” from what the two companies might normally offer…although with a Nicaraguan puro using most or all criollo and corojo from the late 90’s I’m not sure how much of a departure this will actually be for Casa Fernandez.  I love AGANORSA, but it’s not exactly the most diverse profile in tobaccodom.  It will be available in 2 vitolas – a 6×52 Futuro Seleccion 109 and Seleccion Suprema (5-⅝”x46).  400 boxes of 20 for each vitola will be made available at the show, with future production possible as well.

The numbers are in.  The Cigar Association of America’s annual report (via Cigar Aficionado) for cigar importation into the US shows a pretty flat year in 2014.  Both Dominican and Nicaraguan imports dropped, with a slightly larger Dominican reduction…but neither are significant.  What’s interesting is the slowed import flattening for Nicaragua.  You may remember a mere two years ago that Nicaragua was poised – at its then-current rate – to overtake the DR within a couple years.  They’re holding strong at second place, only separated by a few million sticks…but the growth has stalled for the past year.

The L’Atelier Cote D’Or has begun shipping.  It debuted to a soft launch a few months ago, but has begun showing up nationwide now.  It’s a 7×47 soft pressed churchill (the only vitola), and has a production run of 2100 boxes of 10.  It uses the Ecuadoran Sancti Spiritus wrapper (Same as the Seleccion Speciale from L’Atelier), over Nicaraguan internals.  I picked up a few of these this week, and we’ll feature it soon on the show.  It’s a bit of a step out for L’Atelier with its $15-ish price tag, as most of their lines fall in the typical “sweetspot” we so often talk about.

Erik Espinosa will be relaunching the Murcielago blend.  Originally, this was an EO Brands line, produced by My Father.  Through all the splits, Espinosa retained the rights to the name, and says he thinks he has reverse engineering the blend to be the original.  The only blend details are a Mexican San Andres wrapper over Nicaraguan binder and fillers.  Pricing has not yet been announced…and I’m more than a little piqued at how this blend will be and how it will compare to the original….since it was made by My Father at a time when they used AGANORSA tobacco.  I’d like to know the details of how they have reconstructed it.  Who knows?  Maybe it’ll be a dead match.  It just seems bold to declare an exact match.

Asylum Insidious – Ec CT over Honduran fillers; made at CLE’s El Aladino factory.  Might not have tried this one had I known its makeup…but I’m glad I did.  The sweetness provided a nice surprise, with only some bitter notes toward the very end.  With a 6”x52 going for about $4, it’s a win in my book.  I’d  not resist having a few around, but it wouldn’t be a frequently smoked stick for me.

On Dale’s recommendation, I gave the Camacho Triple Maduro another try.  Why do I keep doing that?!?  Tight draw, wonky burn – which, in unison, created a weird “solvent” kind of flavor I didn’t care for.  Made it about ⅓ of the way through the robusto.  Still not my cup o’ tea…although it once was.

Half Ashed Episode 108: Herrera Esteli Norteño

herrera esteli norteno

Herrera Esteli Norteño Coronita

Welcome to Episode 108!  I apologize for the late posting this week, but it’s been a hectic one.  Episode 108 features the Herrera Esteli Norteño, in the 4″ x 46 Coronita.  From the Drew Estate website:

This full bodied, Maduro expression is the first blend released from the Drew Estate factory since Herrera was named Master Blender in June, 2014.  The “Norteño” showcases extensively aged tobaccos from the Estelí and Jalapa growing regions of Nicaragua, coupled with a spicy Honduran binder and a rich, bold Mexican San Andrés maduro wrapper. The “Norteño by Willy Herrera” will be available in the following six vitolas at select Herrera Estelí retailers nationwide.  4×46 Coronita, 4.75×48 Corona Extra, 5×50 Belicoso Fino, 5.5×54 Robusto Grande, 6×50 Toro, and 6.5×44 Lonsdale Deluxe.

News

Drew Estate has announced some changes to the existing Papas Fritas packaging.  The cigar remains the same, but instead of the familiar metal tins you’ll start seeing them in 50-ct boxes.  This will reduce the single stick price from $6.40 to $5.25.  The blend (CT broadleaf over Brazilian Mata Fina binder over cut Nicaraguan fillers) will remain the same.  The new packaging will begin to arrive on retailers’ shelves in the next few weeks.

The price increases are rolling in now, with Oliva this week and Padron next week.  Oliva is going up by about 2.5-5% on average; Padron goes into effect April 1st, with about a $.20/cigar increase.  Rocky Patel is also raising some prices April 1st – but not an across-the-board increase.  Some lines; up to 5%.

Last week we talked a bit about Crowned Heads’ “Single Action”; this week, we have a bit more news about this year’s Angel’s Anvil.  It will be coming down the pike in June.  The 2015 edition will be a 6×52 toro, running about $10.50 at retail.  Total production will be about 20,000 cigars – which will only be available at TAA member retailers.  The line is made by EPC, and carries an EC Habano wrapper over Nicaraguan binder & fillers.

One other TAA exclusive is being produced with a twist this year.  LFD will be presenting 3 different blends to the TAA membership at their 47th annual meeting this year.  Retailers can place orders for their favorite of the three….and only the most-ordered blend will be produced/shipped!  Other orders will be canceled.  I like it.  It’s a fun twist, although I’m interested to see if the retailers who want a nixed blend get a bit upset.

Espinosa/La Zona fans have something new to look forward to: the Espinosa Especial.  This new line from Erik is due out in April, and brings 3 vitolas – the 6.5×48 “No. 1,” 5×52 “No. 4,” and 6×54 “No. 5.”  (What happened to numbers 2 & 3?).  It will feature a Mexican Capa Negra wrapper and Nicaraguan binder/filler.

In addition to the already unique focus on small batch production, Viaje is mixing it up again.  They are partnering with (yet) another cigar factory for some of their lines.  Pinar del Rio in the DR will be producing some of their lines.  One new introduction, the Viaje Collaboration 2015, will be the first major batch created in the partnership, but PDR will assume production for some existing marques as well.

In a story that reached local to me, the Florida ABT has seized upwards of $100k in counterfeit cigars and tens of thousands of counterfeit boxes & bands – mostly Cohiba.  One of the main culprits in the operation was Island Cigars, based out of Oldsmar, FL and Weekiwachee, FL (just a few miles from my house).

What Else We’ve Been Smoking

Craig

Partagas Serie D Especial Edicion Limitada 2010 – *breather* – A great cigar. Half because it was a great cigar and half because it was a great gift. Not overly “EL-ish” from the dominant wrapper flavor, filled with brown sugar, earth, pepper and citrus. This was a delightful full bodied and medium to strong cigar. Yum

2010 Montecristo #2 – I’m never sure what to expect with Mc#2s. This was a stronger cigar with less tang than the 2000 vintage sticks we smoked last year on the show. I got only moderate cocoa & sweet coffee flavors that are the hallmark of this classic cigar. Marred with the highest expectations, this cigar often seems to fall short. This was an enjoyable experience but inconsistency of expected blend integrity took away from the singularity of its tasty experience.

Kip

7-20-4 Londres (5×42): Nicaraguan, Honduran, Mexican and Colombian, long-fillers, Costa Rican binder, and Brazilian Mata Fina wrappers (!)  I’ve enjoyed these for a couple years on occasion.  They’re a “workhorse” smoke for me – they don’t really ever stand my world on its head, but they never fail to provide an enjoyable experience.  Solid woodsy core with some modest spice, decorated with an intermittent sweetness.

Punch Signature (4.5×50):  I had a Rothschild in this new line, and it might be the best Punch I’ve had since the Grand Cru maduro #2 (my favorite).  EC corojo wrapper over Nicaraguan binder and Nica/DR fillers.  Bright spice, some cedar at times.  Was a bit more potent in terms of strength than I expected.  Not overpowering, but brought the “oomph” with it…

Wrap Up

Next episode (109) we will be featuring EP Carrillo Dark Rituals.  So come by Half Ashed Friday night at 9:30pm EST and hang out with us in the chatroom during the show.  If you would like to contact us in the meantime, you can reach us via the Contact Page or the following emails:[email protected] or [email protected]. Please feel free to drop us a line if you have any questions you’d like answered, comments to make…or even compliments and complaints.  We love to get your emails!  Also, remember you can always go back and listen to previous episodes, which can be found in the Half Ashed Archive.  You can download this week’s audio directly below (right-click “Download” and save), find us on iTunes, or subscribe with any podcast app at our RSS Feed.  Video, as always, will be available at the Half Ashed YouTube Channel.

Half Ashed Episode 102: Robaina Farm Roll

Robaina Farm Rolled Cañonazo

Welcome to another fun- and (mostly) fact-filled episode of Half Ashed.  This week, we’re smoking the 2005 Robaina Farm Rolled Cañonazo.  Craig describes it thusly:

A beautifully delicate cigar of 6-⅛” x 54. An incredibly delicate wrapper closes the foot of this nutty and fruity tasting cigar rolled, and grown completely, at the Robaina farm in Pinar del Rio. The plantation, known as Cuchillas de barbacoa, was run at the time by famed Cuban tobacco man, Alejandro Robaina. These cigars are from early in 2005 and have been in my possession since. These are polarizing, to say the least, but have a long history of being a destination cigar of those visiting Havana and the tobacco growing region of Vuelto Abajo.

News

In the news, we covered several noteworthy items including:

Eddie Ortega (Ortega Cigars), Sean Williams (El Primer Mundo), and Erik Espinosa (La Zona/Espinosa) are gearing up for a very interesting venture wherein they trade around blending styles and manufacturing capacity.

Florida Senator Bill Nelson has introduced a bill aimed at protecting premium cigars.

Gurkha throws their hat in the ring with the Maharaja, another “Ultra Premium” cigar….set to retail around the $500 mark.  Per stick.  You read that right.

Black Label Trading Company is expanding their footprint with a new factory in Esteli.

Finally, we had an update on 2015 February pricing changes around the industry.  They are beginning to trickle out.

Listener Email

We reviewed one listener email, from Frank Halayko:

I have noticed a problem with my cigars since I have arrived in Florida, I keep getting tar at the head of the cigar after less than half the cigar is gone. I have been using the Xikar V-Cutter and really like it for about 8 months. After a week in Florida I have noticed a sharp increase in tar coming out of my cigars about 70%, I was wondering if the travel, Humidity I am smoking in, or just the shallowness of the cut is doing this, I am getting paranoid so I check them frequently so I don’t get it in my mouth but still a Pain in the butt???  I also posted it in the Forum under show questions

Wrap Up

We wrapped up with the announcement of our recent giveaway winners – congrats to Officer Paul and Ian Winchester!  Your prizes are on the way.

Cigar News: Arandoza Red Label

July 1, 2014 By Kip Fisher

arandoza logo

Arandoza has formally announced the launch for their next line – the Arandoza Red Label – at this year’s IPCPR tradeshow.  The company has been in the marketplace since 2011 with their Blue Label, with the White being added at last year’s show.  All three lines are manufactured at Erik Espinosa’s La Zona factory, in Esteli Nicaragua.  Per information received from Arandoz, “the “Red” label commemorates and praises the nation’s heritage following on its footsteps of Independence Day celebrating the history, commitment and traditions of the Arandoza Family.  This new label is a full flavored full bodied cigar that will delight the seasoned aficionado.”

The Red Label is presented as a full flavored, full bodied cigar that aims to “delight the seasoned aficionado.”  The blend is comprised of Nicaraguan binder and filler, and is wrapped in San Andres Mexican wrapper leaf.  It will have an MSRP range of $7.25 – $8.50, and come in the following vitolas:

  • Toro (6″ X 52)
  • Church (7″ X 49)
  • “60” (5″ X 60)

Press Release: Arandoza to Release White Label

June 28, 2013 By Kip Fisher

arandoza cigars logoMany of you may be familiar with Arandoza Cigars, and some may not.  Arandoza has been in the cigar marketplace since 2011, offering cigars made at Erik Espinosa’s La Zona factory in Esteli, Nicaragua.  I recently took the opportunity to buy a few of their Blue Label line (Nicaraguan Habano wrapper; Nicaraguan binder & filler) and enjoyed them immensely.  So, I am excited to learn of the following news in which they announce a new line to be released at IPCPR – the White Label.  Here is the press release:

Arandoza BlueArandoza WhiteThe Evolution of the Arandoza Cigar line has arrived!  Arandoza announces the “rebirth” of the Arandoza Blue with its new bold label representing the strong solid foundation of this Cigar Family.  Its bold taste, yet smooth finish, is a well-known flavor in this industry.

With a solid foundation, comes the opportunity to grow and expand.  Stay tuned for the upcoming launch and unveiling of the Arandoza White Label at the IPCPR this July! This new label provides a well-balanced, full-body smoke, directly from Esteli, Nicaragua with its binder and filler from Nicaragua, Viso from Jalapa and its wrapper in a Dark Habano. This exquisite blend is sure to be the Rolls Royce of the Arandoza Cigar line. Its presentation is as exquisite as its flavor, as the cigars are nestled inside its white box branded with the Arandoza label and lined in black felt. It is sure to be a memorable classic piece to treasure. Both cigars are manufactured at La Zona Factory in Esteli, Nicaragua.

Half Ashed LogoPartagas Serie du Connoisseur

Welcome, folks!  We’re back, and only slightly agitated with the unexpected loss of Episode 017 last week.  Thanks for joining us.  I’ll be brief with the summary this week and try to hit all the details quickly.  Our Cigar of the Week is one of Craig’s offerings, the 2006 Partagas Serie du Connoisseur.  We had several news items pop up this week, as we begin to enter the season of rapidfire updates in the days leading up to IPCPR.  Here are a few we covered:

News Items

  1. Eddie Ortega has been showing off the artwork for his October release in the Wild Bunch series, featuring DaByrdman (Ashley Byrd, cofounder of the B&B Cigar Club)
  2. Quesada will be adding a 5″X43 corona to the Oktoberfest lineup this year, which excites both of us greatly.  I already love the blend, especially in the Bavarian size…I can’t wait to give it a try in a corona.  Production numbers appear to be only about 500 boxes of 20, and MSRP is about $7.25.
  3. EP Carrillo is going to release a 7″X70 monster into the INCH line.
  4. Erik Espinosa published a press release earlier this week detailing the upcoming La Bomba Warhead.
  5. L’Atelier published a picture of the packaging for the upcoming Extension de la Racine, which will feature a similar blend to their core line but be wrapped in Sungrown Criollo.
  6. Miami Cigar gave a few details about this year’s Casa Miranda – Chapter Two.
  7. On a pipe tobacco note, two legendary blends will soon be in the US market after decades of being unavailable here.

What have we been smoking?

Craig: Wynwood, La Aroma de Cuba Mi Amor Reserva

Kip: Oliva Serie V Maduro, Padilla Miami 8&11, EPC Short Run 2013, Cuenca 5 Anniversary, Opus – Tauros the Bull

Miscellany

There were a number of discussions in this episode to point out my ever-increasing age and my perception of time since certain cigars were released….

Additionally, we took the opportunity to cover a great number of emails this week.  We needed to catch up after losing last week’s episode to the Great Wide YouTube Universe.  We actually got through 9 of them in the episode, some followups to previous correspondence.  Keep those coming!  We love to hear from you all – just drop us a line through any of the means below.

Wrap

Be sure you all come back next week for Episode 019, which will be a live show at 9pm EST Friday night (June 14).  We will be smoking a Monte Pascoal, a tasty blend coming out of Brazil.

In the meantime, if you would like to contact us, you can reach us through the contact page or at the following email addresses: [email protected] or [email protected].  Don’t forget to get those emails in this month to be entered in our current giveaway.  Also, remember you can always go back and listen to previous episodes, which can be found in the Half Ashed Archive.  You can download this week’s audio directly below (right-click “Download” and save), or find us on iTunes.

P.S. – If you have unbanded suggestions or contributions, you can get those to us by sending an email to [email protected].  This email address goes directly to my wife, so you can simply suggest an unbanded cigar for her to source, or send me an email to [email protected] if you have something you’d like to send in.  I will provide an address to send them.  Thanks!

Press Release: Espinosa Cigars to release Warhead

June 6, 2013 By Kip Fisher

espinosa cigars warheadEarlier today, Erik Espinosa (Espinosa Premium Cigars) published this on Facebook:

On this day, in honor of D-Day, we at Espinosa Premium Cigars are proud to announce that we will be introducing a limited edition cigar for our full bodied 601 La Bomba line called “Warhead” at IPCPR this year. This is the first time the 601 La Bomba line is offered with a Connecticut Broadleaf maduro wrapper. The Warhead measures 6 1/2 inches by 54 ring and is semi-box pressed with the familiar fuse-like pig tail that is found on the 601 La Bomba line. “Although the wrapper is different, we are using the same powerful blend as the rest of the line.” said Erik Espinosa.

Warhead is limited to 2,000 boxes of 10 and the packaging is inspired by several themes in the World War II era. When unraveled, the foot band on the cigar is revealed to be in the form of a bomb. This “bomb” features nose art or aircraft graffiti, which was common in this era. Most prominent is the shark-face which is a reference to the Flying Tigers, the 1st American Volunteer Group, who would paint the shark-faces on their military aircrafts.

The 601 La Bomba line was first introduced in 2011 and is considered to be one of the strongest cigars in the market
