Re: Big Day

So about 3:30am this morning, I was awakened by a loud noise. I got up to do a perimeter check and found nothing (that's neither uncommon nor the point of this story). As I rounded the corner returning to bed, I squared off against what I thought was a small snake or stray double corona in the doorway to my bedroom. Turns out, it was a very agitated centipede. A giant centipede. Not a "yeah man, it was big" kinda thing. An actual giant friggin' centipede. It creeped me the F out. Not a fan. Although I'm not prone to killing the wildlife around me, once something I perceive as dangerous violates the secure perimeter of the house all bets are off. So, I grabbed the broom & dustpan and pounded the crap out of it. I have to admit, its armored exterior put up quite a fight. Almost as impressive as the fact that my bladder held tight at that moment. It was pretty well beyond being photo-worthy by the time I was done with it, but it was about 8-9" long and prehistoric looking. I dug around this morning trying to find out exactly what it was and found a video clip from Bear Grylls where he found one when he was in the Dominican Republic, and a few pictures of others....

For the record, they do indeed have a very powerful, venomous bite...but Bear Grylls overstates the danger. They're not deadly to otherwise healthy adults, unless allergic. Still, despite my normal reluctance to harm a creature I don't plan on eating...I ain't even sorry. That thing scared the bejeebus outta me.

100% Liquid Anti-Awesome. I actively enjoy bugs and such, but I know better than to play with big 'pedes. Think wasp sting squared with that venom, regardless of your allergy or lack thereof. You should have captured it, thrown in an alcohol ball, and then mounted it like a big elk.

While we're on the topic of bugs, imagine sitting on the toilet and having a centipede crawl out of it.

Happened to my bro-in-law. Kid thought he had a centipede INSIDE him.

Maybe it's like becoming one with the cigar. You lose yourself in it; everything fades away: your worries, your problems, your thoughts. They fade into the smoke, and the cigar and you are at peace. - Raul Julia

So the Spanish training is coming to a close. Today was the last full day of class, and the rest of the week is for final exams. I'll be taking the finals just for kicks, as they don't mean much for me (I'm not enrolled as a regular university student, and the certificate for passing isn't a priority for me. I took this class strictly to improve my communication skills....which it has, greatly.).

None the less, I've completed the class with a 96 average and will be digging something very special out to smoke on Thursday. Possibly the Tatuaje Pork Tenderloin I have left or one of the few remaining special Fuente sticks.

It's been a loooong 12 weeks, to be sure....

As mentioned in the Cigarro del día thread, I'm at the cigar shop tonight. It's a perfect example of the culture. There's an event that started at 6. I arrived at 6:15 and there wasn't a soul here besides the proprietor. Now it's 7....a couple people here, filtering in slowly, but NOT the company putting on the event. No one has even batted an eyelash.

While the from-afar quaintness of "island time" can be attractive, I have to believe it's one of the reasons businesses don't come to places like the DR. Our expectations of timeliness and schedules just doesn't jive with local attitudes and actions.
