Re: Big Day
The driving continues to build a feeling of absolute liberation. Last night, when we left Las 3 Reinas, I needed to get from Point A to Point B. The problem is, all the streets were One Way traveling opposite what I needed. So I drove backward through 3 streets and about 2 miles. No one even batted an eye. Other cars simply got over and let me pass by. In fact, we were at one point accompanied by 2 other cars traveling the wrong direction as well. This place is awesome...

Nice. Your kids are SO not gonna know how to survive on American roads when/if you return.Kip wrote:The driving continues to build a feeling of absolute liberation. So...this whole tumor thing didn't go away just because I left the country. I have to find a couple of doctors here. I have a couple recommendations, but I've learned that you don't make an appointment for a time to see the doctor. You make an appointment for the day on which you hope to see someone. You go on your day and just hope you get to see him/her before closing time....

Good luck with this Kip. Maybe the tumor will get bored waiting for the doctor and just shrivel up and die.

On the plus side, prescription controls aren't especially tight here. If you "know someone", you can take your American prescription and get a refill. This is good news and buys me some extra time to actually get in to see a new doctor.

GOOD FOR YOU KIP!! Show 'em who's boss! LOLKip wrote:Yeah...I've taken a good bit of crap over that picture. As a sidenote, my bearded appearance is helpful here. The "vendors" who sell any number of things at every intersection in Santiago (fruit, windshield wipers, cell phone chargers, household goods, chivo (goat), etc) are famously gregarious. In fact, many will forcibly wash your windshield and expect payment - the trick here is to always keep washer fluid topped off in your car. If you turn on the washer they'll go away.mstewartwinner308 wrote:Whatta wicked visa photo you got there Kip!!
For some reason, I apparently look mean enough in beard and sunglasses that a simple headshake and wagged forefinger has been extremely effective at discouraging them. Gringos are often targets here, but so far I have a near perfect record. Only one lady in Puerto Plata persisted in trying to wash our windshield, but I sprayed her with the washer and she took off, cursing me all the way....

Re: Big Day
I'm about as angry as I've been in a long time. The local POS thief has struck again. This time, they reached into my daughter's open bedroom window and took her tablet while the kids and wife were at school and I was out distributing vitamins in Villa Gonzalez today. They left behind a length of re-bar that was apparently needed to drag it off her vanity onto the bed so it was within arm's reach. I could get past the monetary loss of a few hundred bucks, but my 12 year old daughter worked hard and saved her own money to buy it, and it had all her pictures and such on it. It's what she uses to Skype with her friends and my Mom back in the states.
It's bothersome to feel like you have to scan the house and make sure nothing of value is near a window just to leave the house. And, it's tough to love and serve people when the arsehole minority are busy robbing us blind.
We kept very few of our material possessions to come here, and those we brought are important to us. Whether or not they see me as a rich American is moot at the moment. I'll be settled down and fine tomorrow, but tonight I'm pissed.
