I’ve had that very problem. I seem to experience that when I pack the tobacco too tight. Here lately I’ve been packing my bowls more loosely. And combining that with a slower “sipping” like cadence. The results have been good. A looser pack allows me to tamp it down tighter as needed throughout the smoke.
Someone correct me if I’m wrong. But, I think it’s normal to have an uneven burn rate. I think the cherry is supposed to migrate around the tobacco in the bowl. I get the uneven burn quite often. I could be wrong though. Definitely not an expert.
Couple things. First of all, the photo with the jars behind is awesome. great lighting. Great image.
I will say, this last bowl that did the pipe equivalent to tunneling was packed harder than normal. I had a previous bowl with combustion issues and purposely went a bit denser on the final tamp prelight. I bet you're on to something. If it's so firmly packed the air logically can't migrate through numerous channels and is relegated to only one (theoretically).
As I said, I'm sure it's just practice. I've noticed the tunnels occurring even on bowls I didn't pack purposely tighter though, also. We shall see.
Finally, I agree about the evisceration that the bowl isn't one complete cherry and that it seems to migrate around the tobacco as you smoke it. In a cigar if you're taking long drawn out puffs frequently you will get that conical, glowing cherry. If you sip and take somewhat infrequent puffs, you're "smoking" the center area and the heated up tobacco completes the combustion of adjacent tobacco after you puff. It's different, but similar enough for correlation. I think you're on to something.
