I got the starter replaced, despite Nissan's best attempts at making it harder than it need be. You almost need a watchmaker and a Chinese acrobat to fish that thing in/out of its cubby-hole. I fired it up a couple times and it seems to be working. Good day. Time for a cigar.

If any of you ever visit (or on your next trip, @Stewmuse), maybe we'll take a trip to the parts store just for grins. It's surreal until you grow accustomed. It looks a lot like the floor of the NYSE with a gazillion people jockeying for position and yelling out what they need. Nick and I were reminiscing this morning about how disconcerting it used to be before we became regular customers and learned to communicate well enough to conduct business.

No. Nope. Uhuh. Nada.
That's the thing of my nightmares. I'm not one to shy away from situations; normally. Being unable to communicate, unable to comprehend and then being so close to what you need but still so far, just about sums up my ideal WORST situation. Make the whole thing take place in the middle of the ocean and we'd have a winner.

I added a new experience this week. Part of our new project with William includes bringing convicts to speak to some high school kids. William isn't able to come with us this week, so Nick and I have been picking them up at the prison and taking up into Palo Alto. I worked 15 years in Florida prisons, and thought I'd left those days behind.

P.S. - Dominican prisons are *very* differently managed than in the states. Crazy, the things I've already noticed.

Just as a running commentary in my own personal "venting" thread.....generally speaking, I'm a fan of tax breaks and reductions in paperwork. But, there is a (presumably) unintended side effect of this year's doubling of the standard deduction. Many folks utilize donations to various 501(c)(3) charitable causes (such as my work here) as deductions on their taxes. They have mortgage interest, donations, etc. that add up to more than the Standard Deduction and can write it all off. Some, it appears, donate for no other reason. Since the news that the Standard Deduction allowance will be greatly increased, there are folks dropping out of giving because they will no longer break the minimum amount they would need to make it worthwhile to itemize next year - so, their thinking is that they have no advantage in continuing. I get it. Nonetheless, it truly sucks for those of us who rely on it. There's a part of me that wants to say "OK. So if you're not on board with the work you're not part of the effort anyway." Then, there's the other part of me that needs to feed the kids. We don't raise support beyond our budget. Every $20-50 monthly supporter that drops off hurts, and it's hard to replace with only a brief stateside visit each summer. We have to try and visit current supporters and family, and figure out a way to speak with potential supporters as well in a narrow time frame on very limited travel budget. We live on less than 1/3 of our previous income stateside. That extra dinner for 2 every month that they'll gain is insignificant in their grand scheme, but it stings as a loss for us.

OK. I'll go back to my routine sunny disposition now.
