Don't get me wrong, I will pack a dip in once in a blue moon still when drinking around others doing the same, but I have come to recognize how bad it is for your mouth. It used to be a hockey thing up here. I remember a friend chewing in class in grade 12, and wondering when he was going to get in trouble. Kids....
Maybe I worded that funny. I couldn't agree more....but the point of the post was neither flavor nor nicotine delivery. I keep Menthol and Camphor around to be used 1-2 times per year to clear out sinus congestion. For me, it's more effective than most nasal decongestants. The problem is, the effect only lasts for a little while. I just use it as a quick relief to breathe freely for a while.

For those who do use nasal snuff regularly, it is sniffed into the nose and absorbed through the nasal mucosa. Most is actually non-absorbed and returned with a blow of the nose - hence, the nicotine gained is minimal.

For a while it was the fastest growing segment of the American tobacco market (fastest *growing* - it hasn't been *big* in decades). Many smokers were using it to quit, thinking it to be safer than combustion (despite EU warnings, my gut says in some way it probably is). I think most people realized the nicotine hit is so low you'd have to constantly snort rows like a Coke fiend to get the same return as smoking cigarettes, so the movement fizzled. The government banning internet sales also pretty much killed it as well.

As for dipping, I only tried it twice in my while life, and became incredibly nauseated both times. Never again....I can't handle it.

Chewed Skoal for 20 years. So glad I gave that up.

Interesting question. In Inglorious Basterds does Brad Pitt's character (Lido, Lando, Leema?) use Snus or Cocaine all throughout the movie? Snus seems like an odd thing to plan for a hillbilly simpleton to be using as a character prop. Is this a common item for Tennessee men to use? Regarding cocaine, I can't imagine that it was popularized (or even around) in the 40s. I've been thrown a loop. thoughts?

I remember old timers using nasal snuff from my childhood. Come to think of it, it was mostly old women. Some "snuffed" it (snorted), while others actually used it as we are familiar for dip - a pinch between cheek and gum. I even remember some old coots that dipped a moist toothbrush in snuff and held that in their cheek. No idea why, but that's what I saw.

The snuff from someone's mouth was commonly used as a salve for bee stings also. Some kind of demented old wives' tale. I once got into a Yellow Jackets nest and found myself slathered in the spit of half a dozen old crones within minutes.

Y'all think I kid with the hillbilly talk, but that's not the case. Being in a country where a third of the population doesn't have plumbing or running water is oldhat to me....I vividly remember relatives in the backwoods whose water came from a creek and no electricity - nor even a road to their house. Some of my Mom's family lived in areas only reachable on foot or horseback. Fer realz.

Cigarro del dia - numero siete

I use snuff in the winter sometimes. I'll get on a kick for a few weeks where I snuff it multiple times a day, then the fun wears off and my snuff bullet goes back in the drawer for a few weeks...repeat until spring arrives.

I just never got how the inside of your nose wouldnt be burnt out using snuff. Coppenhagen is such a strong smelling chew, I couldnt imagine putting that in my nose. It seems like a weird concept to me.
I guess you think of a lot of different things when you are on a 4 day break from cigars. Had enough this past weekend, so I impossed a moratorium for as long as possible.

Nasal snuff is *very* different in texture. It's quite dry and ground to the consistency of cocoa powder. Think powdered sugar.
