I was watching something yesterday that I can't quite recall and there was a line that was applicable here. Character 2 asks character 1 a question: "Hey, aren't you worried?"
"Nah, all worrying is good for is to make you suffer twice."
Perfect response to the question and so, so true.

I think it may have been the Harry Potter spinoff movie. The only other thing I watched over the weekend was the finale of Walking Dead. No one questions or insinuates worry on a show where you could conceivably worry for an entirety.

It's worth noting that there were no drunk driving laws here until 2007. None. We've heard stories from folks who were pulled over and the consequences were being driven home by the police (for a propina, of course) and having to go back for their car the next day.

This week (Holy Week) is a big deal here, although it now has less traditional religious involvement and is commonly viewed as an excuse for a week of excess. The government is serious this year about drunk driving this week though. From a press release:

"Any motorist who is intoxicated will have their vehicle impounded until the authorities determine that the driver of the vehicle is sober. "

That might be the scariest edict from a latin american country that I've ever come across. Basically, "we will keep your car if we damn well please"

They make that assertion every day....its common to impound vehicles for any (real or imagined, major or minor) infraction, then levy an arbitrary impound fee that is beyond reach of the average Dominican citizen.

I was being facetious about the seeming lack of real concern toward driving under the influence....

All that said, there's no real consequence for non-payment of traffic citations. My friend William went to do something government related and they told him he had to pay his outstanding ticket from 2 years ago first. The cost was exactly as it'd been written 2 years prior. No late penalty of any kind

The UN and its ilk have assigned levels of corruption around the global map. The DR was declared the 8th most corrupt of the 194 countries included. That doesn't surprise me so much as it's the 5th most corrupt in Latin America. That has to indicate a huge portion of national-scale corruption resides in Latin America. I'd have guessed some of SE Asia would help balance some of that out. I've known and have family that spent many years in the Philippines, S. Korea, and Thailand, and have heard plenty of stories that would indicate a pretty serious problem there as well (except S. Korea, which actually seemed pretty tame and amicable).

Yeah. I have no memory of elk talk...
