Re: Big Day
So, about this time last year we were sitting in a cigar shop for Nick's birthday. A large gentleman walked over (the dude is pushing 7') and said he heard English being spoken and wanted to say hello. Turns out, he is a cigar shop owner in the Pacific NW and was down developing a couple house blends with a manufacturer. Long story short, he turned out to be incredibly generous and left a sizable chunk of cash for us to use - which we did, with a number of projects and events in Palo Alto and the orphanage we work at. We've maintained contact with him throughout the time since, and he's back down at the moment (Mike met him while he was down also). Nick and I went up to Camp David last night and had dinner/cigars with the gent and as he'd promised over past months, he left us with 50(!) water filters to be distributed throughout Palo Alto. Even knowing that was what he said, we are absolutely blown away. We encounter a lot of folks that talk...but don't follow up with actually honoring a commitment. A lot. So, I'm sitting here this morning catching up on a few things before heading over to do some WP training with the orphanage staff and thinking this whole thing over. This dude just drop 10 years' worth of clean drinking water on 350-400 people who otherwise wouldn't have it. He made a comment last night that he couldn't solve the Dominican Republic's clean-water issues....and that this doesn't even make a dent in it. He's right, on a national level. However, to the people whose lives theses filters impact, it's all the difference in the world - literally. Very few can afford to have water brought up the mountain (and those more than halfway up have no option, money or no money).
He wants some pictures so he can promote and get a his customers involved to provide regular feed of filters flowing down, with us being hands/feet on the ground to get them out into the community. I still maintain that despite the occasional jackwagon, folks in the cigar industry - as a rule - have big hearts. I've met some of the best folks in my life through a shared interest in this leaf. I dig it.

That's all very good to hear. I still wouldn't be surprised if that new truck shows up.Kip wrote:So, about this time last year we were sitting in a cigar shop for Nick's birthday. Same with us. We touched 60 on Saturday. It's fucking January. Why has weather been so off these past 4 or 5 years?

Last year we couldn't use our rink almost all of February, it was so hot out. It was ridiculous.kurtdesign1 wrote:Same with us. We touched 60 on Saturday. It's fucking January. Why has weather been so off these past 4 or 5 years?
