There was a scathing report released by one of the gov't. agencies here last week that stated roughly 90% of the crime in this country is committed by, in collusion with, or receives a blind eye from the National Police. Crazy.

Actually what's crazy has been the response to that report. It's pretty much "Yeah; I can see that."

Apparently, the average Policia Nacional salary is about $7,000RD (which is about $155US). The rampant extortion and such is simply seen as "supplementing their income" here. Where does one event start to clean that up? Not that it's within my realm of activities, but holy crap.

The past 2 weeks have been very rough. Possibly the toughest thing I've faced in my 42 years here on planet Earth. But, this country is still full of beauty...both the people and the setting. I had the chance to visit an incredible location and just soak in the natural beauty and hospitality of some delightful campesinos who welcomed us into their home and fed us a delicious lunch. It was a good day (and I had a Caldwell "The King is Dead" while enjoying this view as well :) )

Sorry that you're going through a rough patch, pal. Hopefully, these are just temporary issues that will pass or can be worked through quickly.

Besides, you didn't think this endeavor was going to be ALL fun and games, did you? Good luck, man.

"Se fue la luz" has become a daily utterance around my house. Tough to sleep with no fan, near-100 degree temps, and about a million of my closest mosquito friends....

By the way, the more Spanish speakers I meet of different nationalities, the more this video is dead-on. The Dominican demo is at the 2:00 mark, but the whole video is educational....

I can't get them all, but I've made a significant dent in the localized mosquito population the past 2 days. With T-shirt as a swatter, I'm slaying 'em right and left....
