This picture illustrates Dominicans' distrust of the letter "s" perfectly. The word represented on this sign is "colmado." Here, it's written colma2...with the number two being "dos" in Spanish, of course. Since here it's pronounced [doh} without the "s," this works....[cohl-mah-doh]

I spotted this leaving the kids' school the other day. It's a (very rare) Mitusbishi J30. They were licensed by Willys and built in Japan. I'd never seen one in person before. 50 years old and still running in a developing nation. I'd be willing to bet parts for this joker are all but non-existent and have to be fabricated whenever something breaks. Dig it.

I don't see vast numbers of vintage cars here. Old, yes....but typically 70s model Toyotas, etc. There are plenty of pieces of crap riding the roads. Modern era cars are commonly imported from the US also. I do see a lot of models that aren't marketed in the states (the Toyota HiLux comes to mind; it's ubiquitous in these parts).

This old Mitsubishi caught my eye, as I'm a sucker for old Jeeps and their ilk.

For some unknown reason, we can't find good empanadas here. We've tried a number of places and haven't been satisfied. At all. No clue why - most are terribly underfilled and not cooked well.


So, we've begun our journey to make them ourselves. I made 'em with beef, olives, Cubanelle pepper, onion, and a pretty diverse mix of spice. Overall, they were pretty good. Better than anywhere we've found since moving here - and I think we can improve them as we experiment.

Well, we are the proud owners of a microwave. We'd never bought one since we moved because 1.) we simply don't have a huge need for one outside of the kids (rarely) wanting some popcorn or to reheat a cup of coffee (gasp!) and 2.) they're crazy expensive here. The typical $75 inexpensive model in Florida runs the equivalent of $150-175 here. Most electronic gadgets are taxed heavily at import. Anyway, Kristi's parents have been distressed to no end that our kids have been living popcorn-less, so they dropped cash into our stateside bank account and earmarked it for a microwave.

So, I went and bought one at a pre-Black Friday sale yesterday. Now, if I can just keep electricity long enough to use it....
