When you mentioned the water problem, I imediately thought of this high volume gravity water purification system.

But then I realized that it's not really a lack of clean water issue, its a lack of water issue. :(

Well, it's kinda both. And, neither. The municipal water supply here isn't potable. We have to buy drinking water in botellones (5 gallon bottles, such as you'd find on an office water cooler). The water supply is for bathing, laundry, etc. We have access to water filters, as that's one of our services we provide to the communities we work in....but they're low-volume contraptions that we can get inexpensively and last for a long time. Most of the folks in the mountains drink rainwater off their roof or from puddles/streams in the area. We provide the filters to provide clean water to people that have no supply and no electricity (hence the gravity-fed requirement).

For all my complaining, some days are awesome. Nick and I helped William do some work around his house today. We went over to the supermarket and got some unknown type of steak which the market will grill while you wait...had some basil/avocado/olive oil salad and bread with it. It was delicious, and we are now enjoying cigars on his porch. It's hotter than crap, but a light breeze and the typical Dominican barrio sounds accompanied by Bob Marley make it quite relaxing. Digging this day.

I do have the option, but I knew I would be appearing in public this afternoon. It's grown more lax since we've been here, but in general you almost *never* see Dominican men wear shorts in public. Around the house, yes. Younger guys in public , yes. Grown men in public? Almost never. No matter if they're working in 100 degree heat, it's always long pants. Being kinda repulsed by cold anyway, I adapted pretty quickly. Normally, for a day like today, I'd be in shorts. But since I had some subsequent errands to run, I went with jeans....

The school in Palo Alto has not resumed classes, and the people are threatening huelgas (protests) because of the conditions. Y'all may remember this school was built just 2 years ago because the old one split in half during an earthquake. The new one has been steadily breaking apart also, and I guess the community is no longer willing to send their kids there. Here's a link to the story. It's in Spanish, but you can use The Google to translate if you're interested....

That’s genuinely too bad. Will they head back to that little church? Maybe they need a different spot for the school, since that one seems to have ground stability issues. If time goes that there gets to be a new school, there will, of course, be a need/desire for a trumpet-friendly concert hall, yes? Asking for a friend!

And if I don’t get to see Magdalena, then...
