Perhaps you've seen this play out on my Facebook page, but for the fifth time in a month (February 6 thru today), I've opened an egg and found it had a double yolk. I have never had this happen before. Anyone else getting this? Is it a local/regional supplier? Two different cartons of eggs under two different labels. Four of the five offenders came from one carton (pictured). Fortunately for me, I far more enjoy the yolk than the whites, but...

We usually buy large. I think Zed's up to something with this. The Jumbo size is probably key. I have not seen a double in as long as I can remember.

Size is part of the deal. You are unlikely to find this in a small egg. It also, having done some quick Google-fu, has to do with the chicken's age and, sometimes, genetics. Younger chickens and those toward the end of their laying days are more prone to have this happen. The Japanese sometimes try to breed them to do this.

Aren't chickens really productive for like a year and a half? They certainly produce out of that period but I imagine commercially they're no longer viable. Ian, you have chickens. When is that sweet spot for production?

Decided to poach the final two eggs from the carton of mutation. Of course, they were doubles...
