Dominican grub

Food here is a game of extremes with regard to the cost. Items that are not made/grown on this island cost a lot. Other items do not. We hit up a local chain called Olas Pollo tonight, and bought Arroz Morro (rice cooked w/black beans), fried chicken strips, rotisserie chicken halves, casabe (cassava bread) and mangu (mashed plantains w/various spices and onion slices) for 9 people....for a grand total of 680 pesos (about $15.25 at the current exchange). It was an amazing meal for next to nothing. There are plenty of high-end establishments to be found and more expensive options, but it was truly delicious and you can't beat that price....

What's Mangu? How were the rice and beans? Similar in style to Cuban food?

Boiled, mashed green plantains served with onions that have been cooked in cider vinegar. Usually served with pretty much any meal. Probably most often for breakfast with queso frito and some type of sausage/salami.

Rice and beans come in about as many variations and preparations as plantains. Similar to Cuban preparation methods. There are an insane number of types/grades of rice, and several beans that may show up in it.

I'm finding Dominican food to be less spicy than most other Caribbean nations. Don't know why, but they don't make widespread use of hot peppers and sauces.

Now that you mention it, I've never had spicy Dominican food either.

Brian's brother-in-law makes a very spicy hot sauce (and quite delicious), but aside from that I've experienced little pepper-heat in the food. I'm bringing that trend with me....

Is it a slightly sweet & fruity Caribbean-type hot sauce?? I LOVE those.
