The measure continued long after medieval times. In fact, this practice led to the style of pipe tobacco known as a "navy flake." Traditionally (although not necessarily today), a "navy flake" was topped with rum....back in the day, rum "butts" that had been emptied in the colonies were used to carry the tobacco to England. This would impart a slight flavoring to the tobacco.
