There has to be some tactful way to ask them about their experiences without being classless or demeaning. I would imagine the perception would have more to do with how they view you and your concerns/interest in them, i.e. your care for them is genuine and your queries would be more to find out how their experiences were on a deeper level than novelty; trying to hear all their shocking experiences.
