Dominican Republic visit - REDUX!!!
Maybe it's like becoming one with the cigar. You lose yourself in it; everything fades away: your worries, your problems, your thoughts. They fade into the smoke, and the cigar and you are at peace. - Raul Julia

That ash-tray is pretty dang cool!Kip wrote:Not sure I've ever shown that little ashtray here. It's an actual ash....tray. Made of ash from Mt. Pinatubo. It was made with cigarettes in mind, but works swimmingly for small spots like a domino table. I dig it.

Re: Dominican Republic visit - REDUX!!!
First full day here was a little different. Started the day with breakfast and then cigars on the balcony. Spent the afternoon and early evening at a museum founded by the Leon family (same as founders of La Aurora), then stopped for lunch and then House Blend for some cigars, before returning home for dinner and more cigars.

And this for Craig. Had some avocados with supper. A little milder and sweeter, but still fine. Sorry, man...

The weekend is very lax this time around for @stewmuse because it's Three Kings Day weekend, and most of the country is completely shut down. Work begins tomorrow....but my son is taking advantage of having a musician around to begin learning the guitar. I. Dig. It.
White shores, and beyond, a far green country under a swift sunrise....

Almost no pics since this AM, but tonight was a really enjoyable time hanging out at House Blend cigars smoking a Cuban Diplomatico, listening to much better than you'd expect Dominican karaoke, playing dominoes with Kip (and then being joined by a totally cool 10-year boy whose parents kind of foisted him onto us while they went inside the lounge), then a couple of hours of euchre back at Casa de Fischer. It may not sound like much, but man, was it enjoyable. Tomorrow starts the actual work for the week, pouring concrete for a driveway while mixing it by hand, one wheelbarrow at a time. Whoo!

Come take a ride with us!
Dominica Day 3. Our concreting mission was aborted today because steady rain. But hey, at least it was a hard and dangerous drive up the mountain. The road has always been difficult with large ruts and potholes, but now you have the added benefit of mud, small streams, and areas where the road has been washed away or covered by slides. It's always a treat to drive a 7foot wide truck on an 8 foot wide turn where when you look out the window there is no road to be seen, just the 200 foot drop over the edge. Wheeee!

Re: Dominican Republic visit - REDUX!!!
Our actual work today, driveway pouring, got rained out today. These three pics show you how foggy/cloudy it was in the mountains. The first pic is Kip walking down the "back way" drive from the upper level of the property. The second is looking out of the kitchen window out over what SHOULD be a lush, tropical valley. The last pic is one of their doghouses surrounded by the dirt and stone that came down onto it during the heavy rains a couple months ago. Yes, they had to dig the dog out of the house!
