The day before, this bush zucchini was in good health. It produced terrific fruit and was the most successful of my mid-winter seedlings.

The bugs are "canoodling???!!!" Oh, the moral outrage!

Or... Canoodling? I wouldn't have thought that beetles had any need for a boat. Their "arms" are pretty short. How do they hang onto the paddles?

Stay smokey, my friends.

#Dadjokes

(I went to a zoo once that only had a single animal....a scrubby old dog. It was a Shih Tzu.) Bad-a-bing! Those of you in the Midwest may need to read that out loud to get it.....

Luke showed such interest in the garden earlier this summer that I'm ready for additional things we can do into winter. I'm starting the 'ol lettuce regrowth trick in our kitchen. It's already fruitful and he is digging it, kind of. I'll post up some pictures later but for those who aren't familiar, here's the rundown.

Eat lettuce. Romaine is the varietal in use here. Save core where the stem connects. Set core in water. Grow.

It's that simple. Ours progressed in a matter of days. Center leaves from the core began to sprout and now, almost a month later, we've got our own little head of romaine lettuce growing. I just noticed some roots this weekend so we'll probably plant her in the actual garden this week. I hope he enjoys it. I'm actually a bit excited myself. I know you can do this with Haas avacados but I'm not sure what others. We're not warm enough to support the avocados through winter so we haven't done one of those.

What can I do next for him?
