There's also the point that the current governing party has had control of every level of government for 20 years, with crime and corruption more pervasive than anyone's memory - which extends into the days of Trujillo's dictatorship. They have full control of *every* branch and level. So much so that they changed the country's constitution to allow Medina to run again past his term limits last last election cycle. There's talk of doing the same to keep him in power again - and he won't deny that he will seek reelection. He says he will make an announcement about it in March. He has some (albeit waning) support still in the populace, but his supporters have been installed in all the powerful positions throughout government. The segment of the population that isn't happy is large, growing, and growing far more vocal than in the past.
I don't like being right about this...

It's a glorious day, and most of you would agree - although our perspectives for why are probably different. I'm relishing the coolness that blew in last night, returning the breeze after a month of dead air. Image

So I've struck up an informal acquaintance with this dude. His nickname is Rabio (which means rage or fury....go figure). I chat with him while I wait at the light every day and let him wash my windshield for a few pesos.

He wears funny socks. Image

Watching LSU-UCF in the Fiesta Bowl, broadcast by ESPN Latin America. These announcers are off the chain. It's every soccer announcer stereotype. I dig it.

I've mentioned over the past couple years how impressive a job the mayor of Santiago is doing in cleaning up the city. His office posted this video earlier (linked below). Granted, there's a long way to go...but the progress truly has been huge for the city. If they can maintain this long enough for attitudes and behaviors to change in individuals, it'd be huge.

I got one of the biggest compliments this week. Every day, there's a dude who sells steamed corn on the cob out of ziploc bags at the intersection where I turn to pick up Kristi and the kids. I chat with him while I wait for the light pretty often. He asked if I was 'boricua' (Puerto Rican) this week. He could tell I wasn't a native Dominican, but spoke well enough he thought I was Latino in our brief conversations. I've heard similar things before, usually from someone who has something to potentially gain from me - which leads me to take the comment with a grain of salt. But, I've never bought his corn, nor given any indication I was in the market. It was (at least in my mind) an unsolicited, motive-neutral comment. I'll take it.
