María is now toting 175 mph sustained winds. Crazy that there have been 2 storms in such a short period - over the same waters - that achieved these velocities. With forward motion, faster than NASCAR....

It's now within the scope of San Juan (PR) weather radar, until it is taken out (possibly). This is the last real-time highly-accurate tracking possibility, as there are no radar stations in the DR. After it leaves the PR territory, or if San Juan loses their equipment we have to rely on (relatively) sketchy satellite data.

If not tragic, it'd be humorous that this country issues mandatory evacuations for large swaths of the territory, and enforces them....but doesn't offer any shelters.

I've learned a couple things during these storms.

1. If you can't leave anything outside the secure perimeter of the house for fear of it being stolen, it's a snap to make sure there aren't any stray projectiles lying around.

2. Having large solid iron bars on every opening of the house kinda makes automatic hurricane shutters. Sure, small items could technically be propelled through a window, but there shouldn't be a stray cow or goat blown through the bars.

Hanging out listening to the rain and enjoying the electricity while it lasts....so a typical Wednesday night :). The 8pm update has landed, and the wind news is still good. Nothing more than TS winds are expected here. However, they raised our estimated rainfall from 8-12" to 8-16", with isolated areas over 20". My family is secure with the location of our house, but if that amount of water falls, it will likely be a tragedy by tomorrow night in many areas.

While I wait I decided to fire up one of @Stewmuse Mimics. I believe these may be my favorite of his blends to date.

The TS field is just beginning to arrive, though the rain has persisted all night. I probably won't be posting any more for a while, until I see how long we're without power. I'll be trying to conserve phone battery....and smoking I imagine. Y'all have a wondertastic day.

All is well for me personally. There is, however, a great deal of flooding throughout the Cibao Valley, some houses washed away and a number of bridges out. Ramona called down last night and said not to come up today because the road to Palo Alto collapsed. Many folks are being impacted by the flooding on a family/community level, but on a grander scale Maria could have been far, far worse.

Puerto Rico may *never* be the same. They don't know when they'll have power back for much of the island - their govt says 4-6 months, but I'm skeptical. Their existing debt problems have led to severe infrastructure decay pre-storm; they already had a significant portion of the population without power because they can neither service nor supply their power grid. Now what to do after a Cat 4/5 storm walks longways across the nation? Being a territory of the US will help a lot. A lot. But, they're in for a long, tough road. I feel for them.
