MRI done. I've been delinquent in getting one done....it was due in January. Since the farmacia keeps selling me medicine, it's been easier to just take medication and pretend there's no tumor. But, logic (and my wife's ire) finally prevailed and I got one done. We'll know if it has grown in a week or two.

Feel like my head's been strapped to one of these loud motoconcho engines for an hour....

In other news, the rain has thankfully stayed away since stopping this morning. The city dries up fairly quickly, and much of the craziness has receded. It will remain high along the riversides for some time, but at least Civil Defense folks can begin to get into most locations now.

Yes, to both. Santiago proper is slathered with trash as the water falls back. The rivers are still raging.

I'm not sure if I addressed the "Trash" topic in our regular text stream but it sickens me. I don't remember the "Weeping Indian" commercials but always grew up in a family where littering was not tolerated. My parents both smoked when I was a kid in the early 80s and I remember them paying me a penny for each cigarette butt I could collect from the yard. Those and beer can pop tops (back before they stayed attached, youngsters). Looking back now I am struck with the fact that they both clearly littered but had their own clean up service... It's funny what is normal in our memories until we really consider it.

That all being said, I have been struck by trash in foreign countries on numerous occasions. Western Spain was beautiful. Clean, Tidy, without trash but without the feeling of being sterile, either. I've also been in Italy when a trash strike was taking place. You want to have a city ruined? Go to Naples when there hasn't been garbage pickup in weeks. Those images will forever haunt my impression of that place. I teach my kids that littering is disrespectful. I teach them about the environmental impact separately but the respect angle is paramount to me. The earth is not ours. We are stewards. Do you trash a friends place when they're not there to watch over you? Do you damage something that is perfectly good otherwise? We have integrity at the Schneider household and my children will understand and agree with that. I wish more people would too.

When we camped as a kid I can vividly remember my dad introducing me to another meaning of the word "police". I was fascinated by how we could "police" the area when we were done camping in order to make sure we left it in a better condition than when we arrived. "Policing". I can still dig it.

Here's a good example. Check out the trash left behind by the waters as they recede. Also check out the dude with 30 gallons of milk on his moto at about the 1:06 mark...

Meanwhile, students in Santo Domingo are still protesting (this has been ongoing for months). The professors of at UASD (a university) have regularly walked out from teaching because they're demanding more pay. The students have paid their tuition - often at expenses their families can't really afford - and are receiving neither education nor refund. It's a big mess.

Can you tell I just created a BBCode to embed videos outside of YouTube? :D

I don't know if this generational, familial, or individual, but I see this a lot, especially on public property (schools, forest preserves, roadways). It sucks. I routinely have a few empty plastic water bottles that I pick up as I walk home from taking my daughter to school, probably 300+ each school year. If I were militant about it, I could get a good start on a trash bag each day with the various wrappers, plastic bags, and such that I come across. That's just in the seven minutes it takes me to get home. More trash and, especially, recycling containers would be helpful, but it sure seems that a lot of folks just don't care. At least, not in those public spaces. Poop...

My kids and I regularly pick up trash as well. They're always asking,"how come people hurt the earth?" And all I can say to them is "at least you're making her feel better"

We found out yesterday that the road to Palo Alto is entirely out of commission. We can't get up there, and they can't get off the mountain. It had gotten very bad before the recent deluge(s), and genuinely required 4x4 in several spots to get up there for the past couple months. Who knows what we'll find now. William said it's "broken" and we'll have to wait until it gets repaired (which means locals throw dirt at it).
