WOW....my first go with Syrian latokia. So far its very nice. Seems smoother and smokier flavored than the Cyprian I am used to.

I love the stuff. It's easily my favorite MacBaren, although I really dig their version of a Navy Flake as well (although it's a much different tobacco than this). I put away many pounds of it back on 2008-9.

There's a story behind this pipe. I've owned it for many many years, but I believe this is the first time I've ever smoked it. It came in an eBay estate lot I bought. The stem was horribly misaligned with its metal stinger contraption, so it looked ridiculous. Normally, I'd have tossed it in the junk pile and thrown it in with a similar lot to be sold at a later date because I didn't want to fool with it. This pipe, though, is very rare. Even though it was made after Kaywoodie's glory days, the Straight Grain stamp was reserved for the best of the best chunks of briar. You can't tell in my pic, but it has perfectly straight grain around its entirety (bowl and shank) and beautiful birdseye on the rim and bottom. As far as grain goes, that's exceedingly rare. Tiny fraction of a single percent kinda rare. So, I kept it vowing to one day work on it. Today was that day. To try and turn the metal within the stem or shank is quite risky. It will often strip out or break the wood. I decided I was tired of owning it and not enjoying it, so I heated that joker up and made the turn today. All went well. It's reasonably close to where it should be.

That said, I now know the bowl's walls are quite thin and it smokes hotter than a 3-balled tomcat. I hope it settles in once I get some cake built up. I guess you can't win 'em all.
