Really like this GLP Gaslight in my Savinelli. 673. Only thing is I should have cut up the entire plug before jarring it up. Now it's all apart and broken up. Lesson learned. Enjoy

Peretti Thanksgiving Day, lots of subtle flavors, I believe the burley in this is cube cut which I believe lends to a slightly prominent but consistent burley flavor. The retro is great!

I’ve had that very problem. I seem to experience that when I pack the tobacco too tight. Here lately I’ve been packing my bowls more loosely. And combining that with a slower “sipping” like cadence. The results have been good. A looser pack allows me to tamp it down tighter as needed throughout the smoke.

Someone correct me if I’m wrong. But, I think it’s normal to have an uneven burn rate. I think the cherry is supposed to migrate around the tobacco in the bowl. I get the uneven burn quite often. I could be wrong though. Definitely not an expert.
Couple things. First of all, the photo with the jars behind is awesome. great lighting. Great image.
I will say, this last bowl that did the pipe equivalent to tunneling was packed harder than normal. I had a previous bowl with combustion issues and purposely went a bit denser on the final tamp prelight. I bet you're on to something. If it's so firmly packed the air logically can't migrate through numerous channels and is relegated to only one (theoretically).
As I said, I'm sure it's just practice. I've noticed the tunnels occurring even on bowls I didn't pack purposely tighter though, also. We shall see.
Finally, I agree about the evisceration that the bowl isn't one complete cherry and that it seems to migrate around the tobacco as you smoke it. In a cigar if you're taking long drawn out puffs frequently you will get that conical, glowing cherry. If you sip and take somewhat infrequent puffs, you're "smoking" the center area and the heated up tobacco completes the combustion of adjacent tobacco after you puff. It's different, but similar enough for correlation. I think you're on to something.
Thanks for the compliment on the picture!

I think you are right about practice. Pipe smoking is definitely a hobby that requires practice. I’ve been practicing for a few hours every evening. It’s quite enjoyable.

Tonight I’m smoking some Peter Stokkebye’s Luxury Bullseye Flake. It’s a nice VA/Per coin with a “bullseye” of dark fired Kentucky. Really nice smoke! It’s a bulk blend only as far as I know. Can be had for a very reasonable price.

Story about this pipe. Thought it would be cool to have a Savinelli Churchwarden. This pipe was drilled horribly and did not smoke well. The air hole was drilled near the very top edge of the mortise hole. This caused the center of the tenon hole to sit off set quite a bit. I couldn’t pass a pipe cleaner. The pipe also smoked really wet and would gurgle like crazy! I was pretty disappointed with my 80 or so dollar purchase so, I got a bit ambitious tonight and went to town (very carefully) with a small file. I was able to open up the air hole on both the briar and the tenon a decent amount. Now they line up a little better. The pipe doesn’t gurgle anymore, no where near as wet, and I can pass a pipe cleaner through to the bottom of the bowl with a bit of wiggling! Glad I didn’t totally screw it up!

It is a bulk blend, and it's a dang fine one. It's not what many folks mean when they throw that term around. Bulk, of course, just literally refers to the amount you buy at wholesale, and the fact that it's not in prepackaged tins/boxes/etc. Many times, 'bulk' is used in a derogatory way because some bulk blends - the most common ones - are inferior. But, many of the best tobacco houses make their blends available in bulk (C&D, McClelland before their demise, Gawith, etc.). I'm a huge fan of Luxury Bullseye Flake. It's good stuff.

I love it when a plan comes together!

How is that PS English Luxury? I’ve been eyeing it online. Just haven’t pulled the trigger on ordering any yet. Is a milder English blend? Latakia heavy? Curious to hear your thoughts on it.

Definitely a milder English blend and no it isn’t heavy on the Latakia. Reminds me of Dunhill EMP but milder.
