A Stupid Downer :)
Do all the Latin cigar manufacturers wear the Panama hats & Guayaberas because their consumers expect them to? I was just looking at the recent pictures posted up from past herfs and noticed that the Fuentes both have the same hat on. I thought it a coincidence (since me and my father never coordinate outfits...) and then had this revelation. I know the outfits have some practical benefit but It's got to be a shtick, right?

I've seen Fuente marketing materials featuring the hats back into the '80s, and have even seen pictures of Carlos Sr. wearing a similar hat back in the 70's. If I had to guess, I'd say Senior wore that hat and Carlito is carrying the torch in as many ways possible
As for the guayabera, I believe I remember some lore about their origins in the rural areas....Cuba specifically lays claim to the first guayaberas. I think that's just a cultural tie. The gringos (myself included) have adopted the practice after seeing the older generation of cigar makers wearing them.
If you hang out in certain parts of Miami, with a certain age old domino players, you're out of place without a guayabera. I don't see many of the younger folks down there wearing them any more (except for cigar makers)

I will "have to" model my four guayaberas (2 whites, a tan, and a dark blue) for you men some time... And the informal wear I have for my big band is also dark blue guayabera (I own 14 of these). You know, maybe it's because my personal ones are a combo of polyester and cotton, but these are just NOT that cool (temperature-wise) to wear. Great in winter with a t-shirt underneath, but they suck in summer. Just sayin...

The past two years, our shirts from the CFC trip have been Columbia PFG fishing shirts...much cooler (temps), more pockets, quick-drying. I love my guayaberas, but have to admit these fishing shirts are superior for my purposes most of the time.

I wear Simms fishing shirts (I work there) and they are super cool in the summer. And the pockets can hold a few stogies and a lighter/cutter, too!
