A combo of beads and humidity packs. You can recharge the humidity packs and the beads help regulate the humidity.

I do the same thing. You don't need many beads if you use enough boveda. Too many any the bovedas can't get the humi back down.

So bóveda by themselves would work?IWinchester wrote:I do the same thing. You don't need many beads if you use enough boveda. Too many any the bovedas can't get the humi back down.

Re: Coolidor
I use straight bovedas. I have 12-15 in my bigger winedor and 6 in my smaller aging one. I keep all my cigars in their original, or in same-sized boxes. No open cigars in the humis. I make a point to keep any of the wooden sleeves as well just to keep some humidity controlling agents so they can absorb or release himidification if the door gets opened more often.

Re: Coolidor
Why even use boveda? It's just another consumable. If you use distilled water in the beads, they're lifetime guaranteed. Lowest cost, most efficient method and with the sleeves (little mesh socks) they're just as easy, if not easier, to position than the bovedas.
Bovedas aren't made with the same quality media as the higher quality beads. I believe there is a 10% swing with the bovedas, IIRC. The high quality beads (like Cigarmony .com's "RH Beads") have a 4% total swing. It's higher efficiency, longer lifetime, lower cost and less work. Why would anyone use a hybrid system?
Regarding the coolidor itself, Zedman offers the best strategy; use cedar sheets/sleeves, etc to supplement the boxes in the coolidor. Cedar is hygroscopic, meaning it absorbs & releases humidity into its environment. The more of it you have, the more stable your long term aging cooler will be.
Aging requires a few things to be completely successful: darkess, consistent temp, consistent rH, minimal oxygen & minimal pollutants. Coolers work to keep it dark. They work to keep temp consistent. The extra cedar helps keep the rH consistent. The high quality humidity beads also keep humidity consistent. More "stuff", like cigars or cedar, help keep oxygen minimal and pollutants are your own gig. I like cedar cabs or boxes with minimal odor or ink or paper, etc. The more "stuff" you have, the more mold, bacteria, pollutants in general are present. Keep lots of tobacco, lots of plain cedar and you should be fine. No need to over complicate. I wouldn't even put cedar linings in there. Just boxes/cedar, media (humidity) & cigars.

Re: Coolidor
A good solution. I only use the bovedas b/c I have a ton AND have a lot of spare gels (pie jars from humicare I think). They work in tandem so each don't have to be replaced. BUT if you're starting from scratch, I'd agree with cigarmony's beads 100%Arkcigars wrote:I forgot about the fact that bóveda pack will eventually fade out so I'll just go with the beads
