...is surely just around the corner, now that my cigar mold collection is "complete." Well, complete enough. Clockwise from the bottom left: 5 x 50 wood, 7 x 52 plastic, 6.5 x 58 wood, 4.75 x 36 wood, 7 x 48 wood, and the newest addition, 5.5 x 43 plastic which I just rec'd today. Now, if only there was someone here in Half Ashed land who had a preference for
corona-ish sized cigars. Nope. Can't think of any. Oh, well...

I nearly bought that mould this morning or yesterday based on your link. Great size!Stewmuse wrote:...and the newest addition, 5.5 x 43 plastic which I just rec'd today. Now, if only there was someone here in Half Ashed land who had a preference for

(Cue justified razzing)
You're heads are so much better looking, these days. They have just enough of a shoulder to make the cut perfect. What evolved?

Ian - thanks for the compliment, but I'm really thinking that the wrapper leaf itself is making a big chunk of the difference here. I've mentioned in a couple of posts about the quality of the last leaf I received, which has been pretty good. That said, I just wrapped a few more sticks with wrapper from that batch that was more veiny and uneven in color, and they don't look nearly as good. BUT, that wrapper leaf is too expensive to just toss, so I will use it if I can even achieve a marginal degree of good appearance.
Craig - the technique I figured out about tapering the edges helped a bunch, as well as a tip I got from the torcedor (Francis) who works at Habana Cigar House in Rolling Meadows. These last plastic two molds have helped, too, as the 7 x 52 has a torpedo shape built in, and the 5.5 x 43 has a rounded, closed end. The molds I had used before, mostly, just had open ends.
SO... my technique is probably improving over time, but the materials (leaf and tools) definitely make a difference. Thanks, gents!

Re: World domination...
The final eight cigars of (a personal record-breaking number) 152 sticks rolled this month. It brought my "official" total (not counting a few weird things or one-off blends I tried) to 670 cigars rolled this year. To put things in perspective, that amount is like two weeks' work in a factory. I really enjoy working with the new plastic molds (7 x 52 and 5.5 x 43) I bought, although in some three dozen that I rolled I used older wooden molds. It's good to see the humidors starting to get near capacity again and I'm really hoping that I'll have a bountiful amount ready to smoke and share come spring!
